I worked at ODL full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are some great people to talk to and most are friendly. They give out ice cream when it's hot and have family events which are great. They are willing to listen to worker opinions.
They have activities outside of work such as a softball team.
There are opportunities to work the shift you prefer.

    Cons

It's difficult to rise up because sometimes people who get promoted do so because they cannot work well in a line. Some promotions are given because of reasons other than being a qualified candidate and that's quite unfair.

Some lines are not well organized and have bad coordinators, but they still don't get replaced.

Sometimes management says they will listen to worker concerns, but don't follow through with promises.

    Advice to Management

Hire people who have demonstrated a good working record in the company. A very good worker was let go even though he never complained about working in the same place everyday for 8-10 hours, and was very punctual and kind. However, other people that have shown to be disrespectful and do not have a good work ethic still get hired. Please do something to make this fair.

    Cons

I have been working at ODL full-time

    Pros

Small ($200 - 250M), private and family owned
    Good benefits
Stable environment and a very senior workforce
    Growing and profitable
    Industry leader with innovative products
Strong market share and industry penetration

    Cons

Stuck in their ways, and easily challenged by new thinking
    Weak systems and processes
Little willingness to take on risk, which isn't necessarily a bad thing
Low accountability culture, with few penalties for poor performers
Difficult to get fired, even for the incompetent

    Advice to Management

Take more risks, and challenge your people to rise to meet big, hairy goals. Invest more heavily in talent development and leadership training, with true accountability and stakes for those who seek this training. Create a better process infrastructure so the company can grow and scale without relying on personnel alone.

I worked at ODL full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Very stable. Great work life balance if you get the right manager. Never missed a bonus even through the downturn. They sell to their existing customers very well. Still a family business after all these years.

    Cons

The good-hearted management is completely out of touch with the staff. Command and control business structure, micro management and seniority rule. A lot of people cashing checks just waiting to retire.

    Advice to Management

Spend more to hire good people. Then give them room and support to do what they are good at.

I worked at ODL full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Continue to make good money for family.

    Cons

Tightly held. Conservative. Too much politics at the top. Either in the click or not. Say desire for innovation, but continue to go down conservative path.

    Advice to Management

Let the people contribute more. Spend less time holding tighly onto the reins and let the people make some wonderful contributions.

    Pros

Benefits package, and nice people to work with at your level. Good facilities, and a nice area of Michigan to work in.

    Cons

Out of touch management people, controlling HR VP, salary structure favors management. Nepotism in management. Unqualified middle managers. Dealing with customer issues, and having to force feed the ODL way to them.

    Advice to Management

Better communication with "normal" people. In every meeting I was in the theme was that senior management never wanted to hear the bad news. There are a lot of people that really knew what was going on, but were afraid to speak up for fear of being fired, or put on a "list". Trying to push through programs to our customers that they did not need or want. The company got so big that they lost the human touch with regard to customer service. It was ODL's way or the highway with regard to customers.
