ok if it’s a stepping stone to a better job
Pros
flexible schedule to some degree, although you are on call 24/7 for certain issues. able to use lived experience to help a few people, the experience forces yourself to learn how to hold boundaries with others. ok benefits. most people who keep this job either move up quickly or find a way to hold one or two other jobs or side hustles concurrently. met one or two amazing colleagues and mentors during my time.
Cons
minimal to abysmal supervision and support from most coworkers (depends on team and region). poor compensation. wellbeing of staff is prioritized in name only depending on your supervisor or team. poor supervision crushes the optimism and passion of new staff and leads to burnout in some. unfortunately I heard or experienced numerous instances of sexual harassment between colleagues or outreach workers and residents, and toxic rumor-spreading from SOME male coworkers
