Extremely toxic workplace

Pros

- The pay is decent - You will learn how to deal with toxic managers and will have the perfect response to any future interview question about difficult work situations

Cons

- If you've ever wondered how extreme power abuses happen at charities and other organisations with 'noble' missions, Reprieve is the perfect case study - Multiple colleagues had to start therapy and other mental health treatment during their time at Reprieve - Most people (especially at caseworker/officer level) are extremely overworked with no support from management - In fact, the management structure is so top down and the work atmosphere so toxic that it actively hinders people's productivity and wellbeing - There is rampant bullying and widespread reluctance to raise concerns due to fear of retaliation - New joiners are made to feel stupid and incompetent regardless how much experience and expertise they have - Virtually no opportunity to develop and progress, especially if THE PERSON at the top doesn't like you - Turnover is very high (people who try to raise issues and suggest changes quickly become disillusioned - realising those issues have been going on for years and nothing has changed - so they give up and leave) - Everyone who stays (especially senior management and operations) becomes a YES man/woman, having to implement any and every decision of THE PERSON at the top, no matter how mean, illogical and destructive

Pros

You can work on lots of amazing cases, great variety of work. There are opportunities to do public speaking and training.

Cons

The structure is rigid, senior management mostly do not set a good example. Most people are overwhelmed. There are lots of meetings and good performance is not usually recognised. You can get promoted if someone senior likes you.
