Pros

Valuable experience, a stepping stone to literally ANY other union, staffers have a strong union backed by CWA, good if you don’t have experience or a degree. Fully funded healthcare, decent compensation & pension after 3 years. The benefits are what keep people.

Cons

Long, irregular hours with little balance, constant political work (doorknocking on weekends whenever management decides to make everyone work a Saturday), horrible office culture, micromanagement as company culture, President who does NOT trust OR value her staff (“if you don’t like it, leave” is her motto). Absolutely insane expectations for turf- organizers are routinely assigned FAR more than 900 members.

Pros

You genuinely do good work that helps other people, which feels great.

Cons

Took on a temp job with them, and I gotta say this is one of the worst places I've ever worked. You would think a Union would have better work practices than to hire temp employees in the first place. But they truly only care about hiring the bare minimum staff, with no benefits or at the very least flexible work schedules to do a ton of work while management sits on six-figure salaries. I've had corporate jobs give me better treatment than this Union chapter, which is extremely ironic given the values of a union. They're no better than any corpo scum and will take advantage of you if given the chance

Pros

- Best insurance benefits I’ve ever had - Will gain tons of experience that you can use to get a better job - The members are good people and you really do get to make a difference - Majority of the people who worked there were cool

Cons

Huge workload with small legal time. I was working as many hours as my friends in big law while making 1/3 the salary. The justification for overwork and underpay was that we were fighting for the cause. During COVID we were fighting for our members to be able to work from home while everyone except some senior management was forced to work in the Chicago office. The justification was that a handful of people in another department were slacking off while WFH so everybody was punished by having to work in the office during the height of the pandemic.
