I have been working at SSAB full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits and some co-workers. Covered parking and easy access to a highway. Nice building with gym. You can be a slacker

    Cons

Company wants to success but is way too business conservative and very political. This causes them to have some questionable employees that take advantage of others. Some are not cut for the job or lazy, yet HR does not do anything to them being afraid of a lawsuit. Seems like like those that cut corners and cry are rewarded the most. Also seems like a bad for place for minorities. I've seen great people who wanted nothing more than the organization to succeed pushed out. Many try to figure out where the company is going and management does nothing to make them feel secure.

    Advice to Management

Grow a pair and do your job! Project and reward the asset employees . Don't be afraid to let go unproductive ones. Ever wonder why the competitors successful ?? They take risk and are aggressive in their vision. Don't just talk change your culture.

    Pros

The only pro to working in the Lisle office at this company is...uh...maybe...well the coffee is very good (although not free).

    Cons

The company is constantly in a state of distress, or so employees are told. They like to say that they operate "lean", which is code for understaffed. Rather than hire the right people, they try to cut corners by using contractors for lengthy terms and cut them loose before the project is complete. If considering this company, be aware that the job descriptions are vague do not reflect the actual work. If you have other employment options, run from this company.

    Advice to Management

    Tell the truth.

I have been working at SSAB full-time

    Pros

Good Health Benefits and 401K Match

    Cons

Total lack of a real IT vision
Favoritism is the rule of the IT organization
Leadership will "talk down" at you and push blame for issues off to those they do not favor
Lack of accountability of the leadership.
Always in a "hiring freeze mode" and not able to bring contractors on Fulltime after they have been told it will be a 6 month contract to hire gig.

    Advice to Management

You need to realize that an entire change is needed in the IT upper management if you want to leverage technology to improve the organization

I have been working at SSAB full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good medical / dental / vision benefits

    Cons

While there are some very good and bright individuals leading areas (sales, finance, shared services as examples), there are areas like IT that are run with a "I know better than you because I am a director" mentality. It only takes time before every individual in IT is used as the scape goat for managements poor decisions so that they do not take the blame.
    - No training provided to allow growth
    - Do not question those above you or you will be alienated
    - Do not complain about your treatment to those above your manager.
    - Salary is below the average in the area
    - Technologies used are old and not money is spent to investigate newer products

    Advice to Management

Senior management and HR need to open their eyes to some of the issues they have with people in leadership roles and make major changes, People do not leave because of the company, They leave because of the people they report to pushing blame down and not taking accountability for anything.

  9. "If your looking for an IT career look elsewhere!"

I have been working at SSAB full-time

    Pros

    Good Medical Benefits
    5% matching 401K
Co-workers are easy to get along with

    Cons

    True "Buddy System" in management
Very top heavy IT organization for a small group
Lack of real leadership in the IT area
    Poor communication from leadership
Pay is lower than can be found for other companies in the area
Profit sharing and bonuses are rare

The IT organization within this company is NOT where a talented and ambitious individual wants to be if they are looking to use new technologies, be treated with respect and feel you are part of a team.

True leadership is lacking within the IT organization that would help the talented individuals they would like to have, understand what their tasks are and help them achieve them to benefit the company.
Instead what is in place is a leadership team does not set direction or goals from above and then questions employees why they are making the decisions they do.
The application development group lacks a leader that understands technology and how to lead individuals. Instead there is a "Leadership using fear" mentality that drives moral as low as it can go and does not communicate at all with the employees.

The majority of IT employees are brought in as a "6 month contract to hire" and then are never hired even after 18 months or longer. In my years here I have seen many individuals finally quit to take a full time position since the company keeps saying "they are going to be hired but there is a freeze right now". The company is a revolving door of IT employees/contractors and do not understand the amount of technical knowledge that is loss with each individual that leaves.

    Advice to Management

SSAB corporate out of Sweden needs to look at the Americas IT organization and revamp the application group leadership and structure. You are losing to many talented individuals due to the poor leadership that is currently in place.

    Pros

-Great benefits and great pay if you the person that wants to make your bosses rich and you have just enough for what you need to survive this is the Job for you. Bonus has been 75% plus since I been with the company.

    Cons

-Buddy system when trying to move up, they don't look at what you have done or even your background, you will often have people in charge with a HS diploma and that don't have a clue about the process. The management are all drinking buddy's would have a problem with it if they were competent.

    Advice to Management

-Let HR do the promoting and leave the Superintendent's out of the process because they only look out for their own friends
-Need to do anther voice survey soon before all your experience people leave when new companies arrive in the area
