I worked at Skylight Opera full-time

    Pros

Skylight was a low-key environment when working as part of the administrative staff. Small staff. Flexible schedule, allowed a casual start/end time. Vacation was minimal the first year, but quickly accumulated. Nice touch to get your birthday off as a holiday. Gain a lot of experience on a variety of tasks, given the small staff size.

    Cons

Unfortunately, they haven't kept pay competitive. Most people have worked many years without a raise or even a cost of living adjustment. High staff turn over, seems to revolve every few years. Not much room for growth within the company.

    Advice to Management

Skylight is a real community gem. Productions are clever. Fundraising needs more emphasis. Competitive pay would keep people on staff for a longer period.

I worked at Skylight Opera as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

The executive staff is very friendly and visible during the rehearsal process, making you feel valuable and welcome. Great accommodations at The Plaza hotel, near the theater. Artistic Director has great vision for the theater.

    Cons

Working as an out-of-towner can be tough during the Winter months because the cold keeps you from walking anywhere. There are great places downtown within walking distance of the hotel, but it's not doable in the Winter. There is a company van that provides transportation to and from the theater, but no company car provided for the artists. That would be a nice perk, especially in the cold.

    Advice to Management

Great support system for Milwaukee theatre. Keep reaching out to community groups and looking for ways to diversify the audiences and productions. Theatre is everyone's story.

  3. "Local actor with little chance for advancement"

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Skylight Opera as a contractor (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Family feel to the complany. Over all great staff, quality shows.

    Cons

A local non-equity theatre that continually hires equity actors from NYC(not even the best) instead of using local tallent that is just as good or better.

    Advice to Management

Use local tallent. Stop using NYC actors, just because some of you out of town directors insist on it. Milwaukee audiences could careless about NYC names and would rather watch performers grow with the company, like they used to.

    Pros

Great 'family' environment to work. Great people - fun and challenging projects. Very proud to have worked there (though relatively short-term).

    Cons

The pay is not fantastic. Though most people working in this industry are not shocked by that. I would recommend working here for young professionals, people who are independently wealthy or people who are simply in it for the art of the work.

    Advice to Management

I am not qualified to make recommendations to the management of the organization. I would simply would have appreciated if the organization would have compensated work a little bit more financially.
