I have been working at SmartShoot full-time

    Pros

Great ideas, flexible work environment, great location, really cool stand-up desks

    Cons

Snacks are so good, you end up eating way too much!

    Advice to Management

    Keep it up!

    Pros

    Great, genuinely hard working people.

    Cons

Salary was below SF standard living. Most didn't even get a salary raise until after a year and when it did happen, it was the 0.3 standard metric that they used.

    Advice to Management

Take better care of your employees. Give then realistic salary or at the very least offer them more perks and perhaps bonuses for the lack of pay.

    Pros

A few good gigs come though.

    Cons

They take a huge cut of your pay.
Website login doesn't work most of the time, leaving you unable to even submit a bid.
All in all, a waste of time.

    Advice to Management

Fix your IT issues. People can't even bid on projects because your password system is messed up.

Thanks for the review! We have two types of jobs 1) where our partners tell us what to pay creatives and 2) where creatives tell us what they want to be paid. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can... More

I have been working at SmartShoot as a contractor

    Pros

Flexible and the people you work with are nice. Low expectations. It is a good place to practice and get to know your equipment. But you are not really going to have the opportunity to get super creative.

    Cons

There are frequent cancellations. The customers are usually completely unprepared and have no idea what they want to say, and are poorly spoken on camera. Or they want a voice over, so you shoot it for that then they don't want a voice over after the fact. I have had clients cancel on me for months at a time. Or I would show up and they would elect not to shoot it, even though I checked in ahead of time. It is an unreliable source of income. Smartshoot will pay you lip service, but takes next to no corrective action. They actually still owe me for cancelled shoots, but they took down the cancelled shoots so fast and don't keep a record of what they cancelled to retrace your steps. They basically treat their contractors like dirt and don't care if you are out a day's wage, through no fault of your own. They will feed you standard corporate appeasement crap and never follow up with you. No one really cares, or notices when you do a good job.The turn arounds are sometimes unreasonable fast, but to their credit you just communicate with them and they are cool with pushing out the due date. So if you are okay with being treated as disposable, it's cool.

    Advice to Management

Stop treating your contractors like cow manure. You need to really put some teeth into a cancelled shoots when it comes from the customer. As in the creative gets the full rate for a day of cancellation. No one can pay for bills on $50 a day. Incentive to work for you guys is low.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at SmartShoot as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work your own hours. Find immediate jobs paying $200 or more. Perfect for filler jobs if you are a freelance photographer or videographer and otherwise are not working that day.

    Cons

High profile projects usually result in extensive bidding wars and low paying gigs for extensive time spent. Bottom line... if you want the job you will need to bid lower than your normal rate. However there are always jobs available if you are looking for work.

    Advice to Management

Some jobs are way underpriced and require a ton of work for a small paycheck. That being said there are always jobs available which is a huge plus if you are looking for filler work in between bigger, high paying jobs.
