I worked at WaterOne full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great working conditions at the Headquarters Office, flexible time off and opportunities for training, education and growth.

    Cons

There is a cultural mix between white collar employees and blue collar employees that can cause friction.

    Advice to Management

Continue programs to reward employees for excellent work.

  4. "Solid utility, low risk of job loss, but very very slow growth, hard to move up or even laterally"

I have been working at WaterOne full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Conservative leadership means no layoffs and even firings only happen after lengthy attempts to reconcile. Generally it is a low stress employer with regular hours and the staff tend to be friendly and content in their positions. Benefits are within the median range, as is pay. The offices are very nice.

    Cons

It is very difficult to move laterally and almost impossible to move upward. Different departments prefer to hire outside rather than take a chance on someone who isn't directly in their silo. Promotions usually only happen when people retire because the utility is very slow growth with few new positions. MANY employees retire after 30+ years of service...which is both great, and difficult.

    Advice to Management

Look for more opportunities to cross train staff prior to job openings so you can move very qualified employees within the company. Otherwise, you will continue to lose tacit data and tens of thousands in training as ambitious and motivated staff must go elsewhere if they want to improve their salary, title, or responsibilities.

I worked at WaterOne full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

WaterOne is a great shop, filled with great people. Current leadership has a clear direction, clear message and the ability to stay on target, regardless of distraction.

    Cons

Some pockets on "we have always done it this way" exist. Uneven skill set across the organization slows the pace of change to what the most resistant [within reason] can absorb.

    Advice to Management

The future is coming, the automation of some systems now will position to better meet the needs of the community tomorrow.

    Pros

    Steady work place for people.

    Cons

Company is looking for ways to be similar to other companies but they fall short. The atmosphere is very tense. Upper management has started to consider long term employees a detriment to the company, a liability to the bottom line. They are trying to reduce pension benefits, etc.

    Pros

Tools are provided to do your job efficiency and the people are super nice.

    Cons

No room for advancement and upper management puts a lot of pressure on certain individuals.

    Advice to Management

Do not let one director negatively change the entire company. Being pushy and sharp with poeple does not make a good atmosphere to work in.
