Pros

- The mission. This organization isn’t just tackling one of the biggest issues in the world, but is doing so we great commitment and with an eye towards justice and equality. As a person committed to human rights and making a positive impact in this world, I wouldn’t want to have worked anywhere else right after my graduation. - The staff is really passionate about the mission but more than that, I found everyone to be really kind, helpful and cheerful. - The amazing work culture of the office, which is committed to justice, equity and inclusivity.

Cons

- As it is a nonprofit in NYC, office space is a bit limited and there may not be a lot of private space to work. However, they have sufficient communal spaces and possibility to work from home if needed.

Pros

WhyHunger's has gone through a lot of soul searching and reorganization over the past few years. Staff has pulled together fiercely and support each other - and it's refreshing to see this. This happened under very steady, transparent leadership of its current executive director. I see below that Bill Ayres is still listed as ED. He hasn't had that role for several years. The current ED is Noreen Springstead. And she is terrific. I was second of the most senior staff (37 years) at the time of my departure. I am moving on to a new chapter - and have nothing but gratitude for the support I received from staff and board as I pursued my dream career. I am so proud of WhyHunger's work and of my contribution to it.

Cons

Like many not-for-profits, funding work takes a lot of work and the fundraising staff could benefit from a strong support staff. Funding has diversified from being primarily dependent on 1-2 special events / campaigns ... but funding is still challenging. The work, however makes the struggle very worthwhile.

Pros

Good ideas other than that not much.

Cons

The current ED needs to reasses her self and get more training regarding racism and sensitivity, her privileged upbringing shows by her constant disregard for others.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback and perspective. I am pleased to hear of your support of the ideas and vision behind our mission. I am unhappy to hear that you had experienced what felt like disregard from our Executive Director, as it is our policy, and hers, to always treat all employees with respect and dignity. If you have any specific concerns please reach out to me directly at why@whyhunger.org. While we acknowledge your point of view, we strongly support our Executive Director and have no history of similar concerns from staff or partners of the organization. WhyHunger has been engaged in a multi-year process to deepen our practices and policies around racial equity. Led by a rotating cohort of staff at all levels of the organization, this process is heavily supported by our Executive Director (and she is an active participant) and includes: racial justice education and self-reflection, skill building, examining power and privilege within our organization, reworking policies and practices to be explicitly anti-racist and shifting our organization culture.
