AirTrunk announces expansion into India through the acquisition of Lumina CloudInfra, a developer of large-scale data centres with a strong presence in India. By combining AirTrunk’s global hyperscale expertise, supply‑chain strength and long‑standing relationships with the world’s largest cloud and AI customers, with Lumina’s scale and market leadership, the platform is uniquely positioned to accelerate delivery of next‑generation digital infrastructure. The integrated AirTrunk and Lumina platform brings together global scale and local leadership, enabling the delivery of large‑scale, high‑density, AI‑ready campuses at the speed and scale needed to support customers across APAC.
AirTrunk will mark its entry into the Middle East through a strategic partnership with HUMAIN, to build data centers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The initial project involves an approximately US$3 billion investment for a data center campus in Saudi Arabia. The partnership combines HUMAIN’s trusted reputation as the national AI champion with AirTrunk’s proven track record and operational expertise with key cloud and AI customers to advance Saudi Arabia’s vision to become a global innovation hub.
AirTrunk’s data centre technicians play a critical role monitoring and maintaining our facilities to ensure the highest operating standards for our customers. That’s why it’s critical that our technicians have the highest level of certification possible and why we’re working with global digital infrastructure authority, Uptime Institute on a technician training program to uplift critical expertise across data centre fundamentals, power, cooling, maintenance, asset management, and connectivity. The program is designed to accredit experience, identify and resolve knowledge gaps, support transitions into our industry and complement our site-specific training. In just nine months, we’ve onboarded over 100 technicians for assessment and training, with 75% already achieving ‘Certified Data Centre Technician Professional status’ (a foundation degree level accredited qualification). AFR BUSINESSPERSON OF THE YEAR 2024 | AirTrunk Founder & CEO, Robin Khuda has been named The Australian Financial Review Businessperson of the Year for 2024. Robin was recognised for taking AirTrunk from “an unfunded idea” to the “biggest data centre deal in human history” creating the “unquestioned market leader in Asia” all in under a decade. The AFR’s James Thomson writing about the keys to Robin’s success, said: “Khuda sees it less as a transaction and more as a moment for Australian business and the technology sector, when several big themes came together: the rise of the local data centre sector, the explosion in artificial intelligence deployment, the raw power of private capital and Khuda’s captivating story of entrepreneurship – the penniless student who arrived in Australia from Bangladesh, defied the doubters (and an empty bank account) and did something truly unique.”
GROW@HYPERSCALE | AirTrunk’s new global HQ, set to open early this year, was featured alongside Canva and Amazon in The Australian Financial Review’s look into how tech offices are evolving. Robin Khuda, said “The office has been designed to feel more like home with natural materials, plants, natural light, open spaces, an outdoor terrace and comfortable breakout spaces.” The story also detailed how, “Along with the home-like aesthetic, the biggest change from the previous office, driven by employees, will be more spaces to connect and collaborate. “Tech will also play a bigger role in the office, with most meetings often having at least one person not in the room due to AirTrunk having employees across the Asia-Pacific region.” Stay tuned for more on the new global HQ.
INDUSTRY | AirTrunk has joined the new Asia-Pacific Data Centre Association (APDCA) as one of eight founding members - the key players in the data centre industry in the Asia Pacific. APDCA is the first-of-its-kind trade association established to represent the collective interests of the Asia-Pacific data centre industry. Association members are committed to working with governments to co-develop policies that drive the security and resiliency of data centres, minimise environmental impact, and deliver positive economic benefits to the local communities in which they operate.
AWARDS | AirTrunk’s A$4.7 billion Sustainability Linked Loan (SLL) has been awarded the ‘Best Debt Finance Deal’ in FinanceAsia’s ‘Achievement Awards 2023 for ANZ. AirTrunk’s SLL set multiple industry benchmarks, including: 🏆 Largest by a data centre operator globally 🏆 First to utilise carbon usage effectiveness as loan KPI 🏆 First to combine carbon, energy and water usage effectiveness as loan KPIs 🏆 First by a data centre operator to incorporate gender pay equity KPI 🏆 First to use margin incentives to fund social impact programs across APJ Thanks to Crédit Agricole CIB, Deutsche Bank, DBS Bank, HSBC, ING, Morgan Stanley and MUFG. AirTrunk has now raised over A$6 billion in ESG financing across its APJ platform, making it one of the largest issuers of sustainable financing in the data centre industry.
