On Sunday, we marked World Suicide Prevention Day, an opportunity to reflect on the importance of mental health and the role each of us play in making a positive difference. Suicide is a global issue that affects millions of lives every year. The latest suicide statistics show that it is now the biggest killer of men and women under 35 in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Every life lost to suicide is one too many and the construction sector is impacted more than most as rates are nearly four times higher than the national average. At Barratt Developments, we aim to address the stigma around suicide and raise awareness by driving the conversation that 'it’s ok to talk'. Being a supporter of the Zero Suicide Alliance (ZSA) means Barratt colleagues, sub-contractors, friends and family can easily access the 20-minute 'bite-sized' suicide awareness e-learning modules to gain skills and confidence to support someone who may be considering suicide. If you or someone you know is struggling, remember, 'it’s ok to talk'. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #MentalHealthMatters #Health&Wellbeing
As part of our ongoing commitment to support our employees with their mental health, we have a network of trained in-house Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAs) across all of our Regions, and during 2023 we have further invested in training additional MHFAs. In support of our growing network, we are delighted to share that we have introduced a structured network of Lead MHFAs in each of our regions. Our Lead MHFAs will assist our divisional MHFAs by coordinating regular check-in meetings and helping promote the mental health support on offer. In addition, they will be championing our broader wellbeing themes and events across the business. #MHFAs #wellbeing #investinginourpeople
As Pride colours and celebrations fill the air, we’re proud to stand with the LGBT+ community and champion the values of love, acceptance, and equality for all. Pride is more than just a month-long celebration; it is an opportunity to educate, recognise the challenges facing the LGBT+ community, increase awareness of discrimination, and celebrate the positive momentum of change. To show our solidarity and honour the courage and resilience of the LGBT+ community, past and present, we are hosting many events with colleagues in collaboration with our LGBT+ employee network. We encourage all employees to embrace their authentic selves and be allies to their LGBT+ colleagues. Let's actively listen, learn, and support one another, ensuring everyone feels valued and included at our company. #ProudToSupport #Pride #DiversityandInclusion #Equality #LGBT+
It's Men's Health Week! We're pleased to announce a new partnership with the 'Lighthouse Club Construction Industry Charity' to bring wellbeing advice, help and support to our site-based teams as well as our sub-contractors. For the first time, the charity will run its 'Make it Visible' campaign at our construction sites, with the Lighthouse Club team on hand to share some of their lived experience and to provide on-the-day support and signposting colleagues to further information. We want to continue to open up the conversation about wellbeing and in particular mental health in construction and we want to take this opportunity to further shine a light on the importance of talking and seeking help and support when needed. #menshealthawarenessweek #healthandwellbeing #lighthouseclub
As part of our commitment to build a more diverse workforce, we attended Future Opportunities for Women in Construction last week to highlight the many benefits of a career in the homebuilding industry. The event, hosted by The Skills Centre and supported by TTLP, Transport for London's new property company, offered women the chance to hear from a range of businesses about how they are working to improve diversity in the industry, the variety roles and opportunities available and how they build a successful and rewarding construction career. Having hosted a meet and greet session, Lauren Potter, Head of Land at Barratt London, said: "It was a pleasure representing Barratt alongside a team of inspiring women from around the business, all with the shared goal of encouraging more women to join or progress their careers with Barratt or within the industry." #womeninconstruction #buildingwithoutbarriers #barrattdevelopments

We want to break the stigma around menopause, so all our colleagues have a better understanding, especially as 32% of our workforce are women. Whilst we realise not everyone experiences these symptoms, it’s important we offer the support to those that do, while educating the rest of our business around the subject.
Wanting a full-time career and the opportunity to continue working towards an extra qualification, Martha chose to join one of our Degree Apprenticeships. Now she’s an Assistant Quantity Surveyor at Barratt and couldn’t be happier having chosen a route that offered on-the-job experience, a career, and a degree.
