The traditional network is really underutilized because you build for peak use in every location -- access, edge, core. We actually treat it, on a single-location basis, as a pool of ports. It's a fully virtualized concept from a technology perspective. We take the big router and break it into building blocks and run a cloud-based software on top of it. It takes people a while to really grasp the full benefits of the model, but the reaction is ultimately, 'Wow, how come nobody thought of that?'

DriveNets has developed a software solution designed to free companies from the burden of buying this expensive equipment. It doesn't eliminate equipment procurement, but instead of being based on sophisticated routers, it uses cheaper and smaller "stupid" equipment, while the brains are in the software instead.

DriveNets has been working closely with AT&T for a while and is believed to be deployed in at least part of its network already. Its Network Cloud system is designed to run on white boxes based on Jericho2 chips, hence its ability to sprint straight out of the traps last week to announce that its stack is aligned with the DDC model. This should make DriveNets, which has significant funding behind its efforts, more attractive to other operators that want to follow AT&T's example and light a fire under the CTO teams at the incumbent router vendors, who don't want to see their business eroded by upstart suppliers.
DriveNets expanded its Series A financing round to $117 million with the addition of three new investors: Microsoft chairman John Thompson, Seagate chairman Steve Luczo, and former Palo Alto Networks CEO Mark McLaughlin. Luczo has also joined DriveNets' Board of Directors.
DriveNets has the hallmarks of a market disruptor -- experienced staff, technology already in the field, financial backing -- that is targeting the sweet spot of a number of major industry players, most notably Cisco, Juniper, Nokia and Huawei.
