"Recent events have created an awareness, divide, concern and many other emotions. We are at a volatile and critical time for humanity, the economy and the workplace. As people return to work, many people of color are reporting extreme levels of exhaustion. The worst thing any organization can do right now is nothing. On the other hand, a company-wide memo with a sanitized corporate statement isn’t going to do the trick either. What should companies do? Dialogue is going to be the most important first step. But many leaders are hesitant to dive into a dialogue that can feel like a powder keg waiting to go off. Kwame Christian Esq., M.A., the director of the American Negotiation Institute, says that, “The best things in life are on the other side of difficult conversations.”
"Adobe pays attention to what other tech companies do in the accessibility space. May said he admires Apple, Google, and Microsoft for all being actively engaged with the disability community. The so-called “titans of tech” make accessibility not just a priority—they make accessibility a top priority. That quality resonates with May, who wishes more designers and developers heeded the call to action. “I wish more designers and developers knew the impact of the accessibility work that goes into the platforms they build on, that’s what inspires me to educate and conduct my in-person trainings,” he said. “It seems that if designers and developers know the potential implications for some users, for example, or how the design could be perceived non-visually, or without a mouse, or with larger fonts, they would prioritize it even more.” - Matt May
"...in order for there to be a great America, there's got to be a great black America. And in order for there to be a great black America, there's got to be great black businesses. We need great Black Chambers and we need white and black consumers. We need people to support black-owned businesses by buying their products and services. We talk about civil rights and social justice, but there's got to be economic justice as well. There are a few things non-black business owners can do. We ask companies to participate in the 15 percent pledge: Promise to buy at least 15 percent of your inventory from black suppliers." ➡️Ron Busby founded the U.S. Black Chambers in 2009. The Washington, D.C.-based organization advocates for black-owned businesses, improves access to capital and contracts, and provides free training for entrepreneurs.

For many minorities this week has been difficult. Seeing painfully disturbing imagery of recent events on the news and social media can be very traumatic. Be understanding towards your team and colleagues who may be experiencing emotional turmoil and burnout. Let's all be intentional about being understanding, kind, and patient to those who might need it — and give them a gentle reminder that they don't have to go through it alone.

How often do you think outside the box when faced with a challenge? "It’s good advice, but easier said than done, because many times we don’t even realize that we’re “in the box. That’s because much of our decision-making and problem solving is done on a subconscious level, where our minds use learning mechanisms known as schemas. Schemas are thought patterns that provide context for new learning based on prior experiences. Our minds recognize familiar situations, then make logical leaps that help us problem-solve."
