What is black history month for me? Well it starts with that I was born with black skin and my mother with her unequivocal sacrifice did her very best to protect me from the systemic racism of the outside world. What I was not aware of and what I would soon come to find out is that the world within the four walls of my home was not the same world beyond them. Every time I stepped outside I was no longer protected by my mother’s warm hugs and constant reminders that she loves me. Fast forward to present day, I have learnt what it means for me to walk through this thing called life. From the first time I ever got followed in a store to when I was first stopped by the police. The thoughts that ran through my head was trying to figure out what I did wrong. In 400 years we have come along way but with the continued recognition of the systemic racism and years of triumph for black people, we have at least scratched the surface. For me, I know I am doing my part in hopes that someday black children and other children of colour can experience life without prejudice.
