Great Work Environment and Flexibility, but Career Growth and Structure Could Improve

      Pros

The work/life balance is excellent, allowing for both personal and professional fulfillment. In my team, we were not expected to work on weekends, and summers were particularly chill, with most people wrapping up early on Fridays and having the flexibility to plan their work during the week. The hybrid work model offers great flexibility, while the team members are incredibly helpful and supportive, fostering a collaborative environment. Meetings are kept to a minimum, which allows for more focused work time. The pay was also competitive, and they recently introduced an RRSP program, which is a nice added benefit. Article is a growing, profitable company that is doing well despite the competitive landscape. Nice company events like the summer Olympics and Halloween were great for team bonding, providing a fun way for team members to spend time together in the office. I also loved the fact that I could bring my pet to the office, which made the work environment feel even more welcoming. :)

      Cons

Career growth opportunities are limited, particularly for senior ICs and mid-level managers. Some internal hires turned managers lack people management skills, which results in inadequate support for their teams. The company sometimes struggles with a lack of clear structure, leading to disorganization and difficulty in managing tasks. Communication and alignment across teams could be improved to reduce confusion and rework. Frequent tech transitions have required significant unlearning and relearning, often without proper risk assessments. The hybrid work model is somewhat inconsistent—people hired remotely before COVID can work from home, but new hires do not have that option. This creates a fluid and sometimes awkward in-office dynamic, where you may end up in the office alone, even if your team is not present. The company is a good fit for those seeking a more fluid, startup-like environment, but may not provide enough structure or growth opportunities for IC roles. Despite hard work, recognition and rewards can sometimes be lacking. Additionally, the feedback mechanism is one-sided, as there’s no opportunity to provide 360-degree feedback, particularly about managers.

Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback. There is a lot of thoughtful feedback here, that has been shared and discussed by the People & Culture Leadership team. Specific to a few points - we know there are opportunities to improve the way employees are recognized for their work at Article and we'll be making some changes this year to help address this. Additionally, we do have 360 feedback mechanism for managers with upward reviews from their direct reports. This might not have been used when you worked with us but it is now. Finally, in regards to career development opportunities, we do have Grow tracks for most jobs, however, ultimately the person driving career progression needs to be the individual themselves as the paths laid out might differ from that person's personal goals and interests.

They hired a lot of remote employees then a year later, they move everyone back to office 3x a week. When asked why they thing work in the office is better, they say they dont have an answer..

      Pros

Amazing coworkers who are still in my life today. First year of employment was enjoyable and learned a lot!!

      Cons

Incredibly destabilizing environment since the first round of layoffs a year ago. Never know what the week will bring in terms of new and faulty systems, changes to pay structure (salary to hourly), quiet lay offs, all while having zero opportunity to grow within the company or proper raises.

Thank you for your feedback and for sharing your experiences. We truly appreciate your positive comments about your coworkers and your initial year with Article. We understand that the past year has brought many changes. Here are a few points we’d like to address directly: The shift from salary to hourly pay for our Customer Care team was implemented to simplify the overtime process and ensure accuracy in pay for our Particles. This change was coupled with a compensation adjustment, resulting in an overall pay increase for our Customer Care Associates. We acknowledge the environment has undergone ongoing changes. As we transition from a period of hypergrowth towards building a mature and lasting organization, some restructuring has been necessary to evolve. The timing of growth opportunities can vary, and they are based on the needs of the organization. We encourage internal applications whenever possible. However, Customer Care team members have seen numerous promotions within the team, and others have grown within the organization moving into Communications, B2B Sales, Learning & Development, and eCommerce to name a few.

We decided to close our smaller delivery warehouses as a result of ending our internal delivery services. We now are utilizing our four large North American fulfillment centers as distribution hubs and working with 3rd party logistics partners for final mile deliveries. This decision was made after this thorough analysis and consideration of current market conditions. The price of external 3rd party final mile carriers has decreased significantly while the service level now matches what we could provide. This combination meant that our internal delivery services were no longer competitive and we had to say goodbye to some amazing employees. This was a tough decision, but the right decision for managing costs which otherwise would have impacted our customers. -Tim Melland, VP, Logistics
