How are career development opportunities at Backroads?

      Backroads reviews

      Good career opportunities

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Friendly work environment Competitive compensation Many career opportunities internally 1 day of WFH

      Cons

Heavy workload not allowing for a work/life balance. A bit of favoritism/nepotism, resulting in some employees getting positions they're not qualified for. Systems and processes too dated and not adapted to the current size of the company

      Challenging environment

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Great perks, great people, fun comp trips to beautiful places around the world, reasonable hours

      Cons

Lack of coherent IT strategy or vision. Dominating CEO/Owner and subservient executive team makes for toxic culture. Small business with limited career advancement opportunities. Expectation that a probono trip and fun youthful culture make up for lower pay.

We’re glad to hear you had a positive experience with your colleagues and appreciated some of the perks and travel opportunities. We also recognize that clarity around direction and opportunities for growth are important parts of the employee experience, and it’s disappointing to hear that this didn’t come through during your time here. Thank you for sharing your perspective.

      Loved the Trip Leader Role!

      Pros

The organization offers flexibility, autonomy, a thorough hiring and training process, a great mentorship program, and significant opportunities for feedback and growth. Overall, it provides an incredible community experience.

      Cons

Transitioning from a nomadic leadership lifestyle proves to be challenging due to the companies policy of requiring 'office' personnel to reside in hub locations. This requirement, while understandable, is regrettable as it hampers opportunities for personal and career development, which I highly value.

      Pros

Amazing international community. Possible to save up a bit of money due to very few expenses during the season. The chance to travel to beautiful destinations. Lots of professional and personal growth opportunities. Management who truly cares.

      Cons

Big commitment. Constantly away from friends and family. Lots of instability - occasional schedule changes, not knowing where you will be when, no constant income, etc. Continual communal living can be tough for some.

      Pros

Good pay and benefits (including a yearly trip amount)

      Cons

      - People are very cliquey and don't let new people in easily - There is hardly any recognition of a job well done. People pretty much ignore big things you've accomplished, and basically say "why isn't the next thing done yet?". - I had another employee totally lying about me, and no one believed me because she had been around a lot longer. I don't know what her problem was, but she was just making things up (she had severe health issues so who knows what she was thinking). - My manager was not supportive at all, and when she'd ask me about various tasks and I would explain the status of things, she would say I was being defensive, even though she had just asked me for status and I gave it. - This was just the weirdest environment I've ever worked in. I felt like I was in an alternate universe that I just couldn't make sense of. Normally I'm the star worker of any team I'm in, but I felt like I was doing something wrong at every turn and I just couldn't get why. - I couldn't wait to get out of there!!!! I wouldn't continue working in that environment for any amount of money! - I wish I could give them zero stars

We appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback on your experience with us. We value inclusivity and recognition of our team's efforts, so it's disheartening to hear that wasn't your experience. Please know that your feedback is taken seriously, and we are committed to investigating these issues. We're grateful for the positive note on our compensation and benefits, but understand that doesn't negate the concerns you've raised.
