Pros
The managers are great, they clearly communicate and check in often (daily and with performance reviews). The store preaches kindness and compassion and pretty much abides by it. Exceptionally difficult/problematic/disrespectful customers are banned from calling/visiting the store and they stand by these decisions. The only time I haven't witnessed action being taken is when customers commit (repeated) microaggressions, especially anti-transgender sentiment. The management and staff do a great job training new hires, but no additional compensation is offered to those who do the training. The pay starts off on the 'higher' side of minimum wage -- $17 -- and after 6 months employees are eligible for a $0.50 raise. The employee discount at 30% is great but could be better in that it is a natural/organic store so things are extremely expensive and outrageously marked up. The best part is the free to staff produce, bread, and wellness items.
Cons
The upper management is very disconnected from the actual store. People from the central office will come in and demand changes that make hourly workers' lives more difficult and do not actually benefit the store or its employees. The CEO Scott Nash claims open communication where customers and employees can email/text him directly. I acknowledge that it is impossible to reply to everybody as someone who owns 15+ stores, but if you're going to claim open communication then you really need to commit to it. Customers often complain that they have reached out but haven't received any kind of response and its quite annoying for hourly employees to have to deal with the ramifications of his decisions. Regarding performance reviews, when hired you are told that there will be 6 and 12 month initial reviews; while the first came around the necessary time, the 12 month review in which you are supposedly eligible for $1+ raise do not occur in a timely manner. It can take months after the year mark to actually sit for your performance review which is, in my opinion, misleading since they advertise that after one year you can receive a raise but don't actually conduct that review for months past your anniversary. Assistant managers and managers in training get moved around a lot; while I can kind of understand and respect this, it also makes continuity in the general operation of the store difficult (as they often don't replace the manager that was moved for months if at all) and messes with morale if the manager is well liked by staff.
Pros
Environmental company Nice store layout
Cons
Weird company to work for. Talks about Core values but does not practice them with staff. Have seen multiple good folks leave/demoted/fired often without coaching, feedback or support or documentation. Tight group up top lead by some pretty egotistical beings who push their religious beliefs (Buddhism) on growing management while scoffing at other religions. Very much a company where feelings matter more than actual business practices and truth. Talks about promoting from within, then sets people up with little to zero support. Favoritism to those who are better at socializing rather than production. I (accidentally) personally witnessed someone in management hiring their sister to a central office role with an inflated salary. Have witnessed *borderline* Union busting attempts.
