      Pros

Working at TutorABC has been the best decision I've ever made. It allows me the opportunity to work from home with flexible hours. This works really well around busy family life. The TutorABC team are really supportive and positive. There is a community where we can ask questions and share ideas with our colleagues. Everyone is assigned a mentor, who observes our lessons and helps us to be reflective in our practice. We are kept up to date with the latest training, ensuring we are achieving high standards for our students.

      Cons

I have worked in other online companies where the materials aren't great/there is no support/students are difficult. This company seems to be striving to be the best for both the teacher and the students, and over the last few years there have been many positive changes. I feel that this reflective approach will only continue.

Greetings Teacher, Thank you for taking the time to write us feedback on Glassdoor. We're pleased to read that you were happy to be able to work at home and that you were able to gain valuable teaching experience with our company. We have been working hard to develop useful, relevant training materials that aid our teachers with professional development. We also have Mentors that our teachers can reach out to in the Teacher Community whenever they have a question or an issue with a student or class. We're sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy teaching juniors. We find more of our teachers have a blast with the little ones. Teachers can request to have their Junior tag removed if they wish to teach only adults. Thank you once again for your feedback. We appreciate you sharing your experiences. Sincerely, TutorABC (helpme@tutorabc.com)

      Pros

      - payment never fail - flexibility - convenience to work from home

      Cons

      - payment is very low especially for 45 minutes class where you can get a maximum of 4 students - the feedback system where students rate your performance is not fair in some situations and if you complain it is always your fault - students many times are placed at the wrong level at it's really hard to teach a student when he doesn't understand the basics - you are fully schedule and 3 hours before the classes are removed

Greetings Teacher, We appreciate you taking the time to leave us feedback here on Glassdoor. The reliability of on-time payments, scheduling flexibility, and the convenience of working from home are definitely pluses to working at TutorABC. We believe they contribute to a better work-life balance. Thank you for sharing your concerns with us as well. We understand the importance of fair compensation and strive to ensure that our pay structure is competitive and equitable within industry standards. We understand that teachers sometimes receive unfair feedback. Each month, we remove 4% of low ratings to ensure they do not negatively impact our teachers. Please remember that an unfair rating does not reflect your abilities or performance as a teacher. We appreciate your dedication and commitment to your students. Placing students at the correct level is crucial for their learning success. We're actively working on addressing this issue on a case-by-case basis. And to address your comment about cancellations, unexpected situations can arise and students may need to cancel their classes close to the start time. We appreciate your understanding and if you are concerned about a student that cancels frequently you can reach out to us in the Comm Center. Thank you again for your feedback. Your insights are valuable and help us improve our service to teachers. Sincerely, TutorABC (helpme@tutorabc.com)

8 years experience working for the company

      Home-based online english teacher
      Current employee
      London, England
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

      1. Flexible Schedule: The company offers the ability to set your own schedule, making it suitable for those looking for part-time or remote work. 2. Work-from-Home: Being able to work from the comfort of your home is a significant advantage, especially for individuals with other commitments. 3. Opportunities for New Teachers: A good starting point for those looking to gain teaching experience in ESL (English as a Second Language). 4. International Exposure: You get to interact with students from different cultural backgrounds, which can be a rewarding experience. 5. Completion Bonuses (Though Limited): Some bonuses are available, although they are conditional and not guaranteed. 6. Training Opportunities: The company provides training sessions to help teachers improve their skills and adapt to new materials or teaching strategies. 7. Class Materials Provided: Pre-prepared class materials are available, reducing the need for teachers to create their own lesson plans and saving time.

      Cons

      1. Low Pay: The pay has seen significant cuts over the years and is now well below industry standards, especially for qualified teachers with degrees and certifications. 2. Below Minimum Wage (UK): For UK-based teachers, the pay often fails to meet legal minimum wage requirements when factoring in prep time, feedback reports, and early classroom entry. 3. Unfair Penalties: Teachers face penalties for sick leave, vacations, or when the scheduling system doesn’t allocate enough classes—issues often beyond their control. 4. Unpaid Training and Standby Time: Teachers are required to spend unpaid time on training and standby sessions, which can be disruptive and unproductive. 5. Lack of Career Growth: Despite years of loyalty and experience, there is little to no opportunity for career advancement or pay increases. 6. Currency Conversion Issues: Payments in USD are a disadvantage for teachers in countries like the UK, where exchange rates negatively impact earnings. 7. Demotivating Policies: Strict policies, such as removing teachers from the system after illness or missing hours, create an unnecessarily stressful environment.

      Pros

As much free training as you need/want. I also had an amazing mentor Teacher Rep Sophia who went above and beyond her role to help you succeed. Lots of free props to help with your teaching. Hours to suit and working from home.

      Cons

Clients score you on how they feel the lesson went. The company expect no less than 10 out of 10 every time. If a client gives you a poor score, usually from not understanding the process, you are bombarded with lots of compulsory training. Your account gets suspended if you don't comply which means no work. Don't always get your working hours filled.

Greetings Teacher, We appreciate you taking the time to write us a review. We're glad to hear that the training, support from Teacher Rep Sophia, and resources we provide have been beneficial. It’s our goal to ensure that every team member has the tools and guidance needed to succeed. We strive for high client satisfaction, but we also understand not every student decides to give out 10s. We aim to support our teacher team through comprehensive training and resources to address any issues effectively. Regarding working hours, we recommend adding as many peak hours as possible during weekdays and weekends. This will also help teachers gain followers which leads to a more consistent schedule. Your feedback is valuable, and we’ll take it into consideration as we work on enhancing our processes. Thank you for being a dedicated member of our teacher team. Kind regards, TutorABC (helpme@tutorabc.com)
