What are perks and other benefits like at Unity?

Squandering the eggs of a golden goose

      Software developer
      Former employee
      Montreal, QC
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Great benefits (commute reimbursement, free meals 3x a week), good total compensation, chill colleagues and work environment, great office, interesting projects.

      Cons

Previous head of management made inexplicable mistakes post-IPO and put the company in the precarious position it is in today. New interim CEO's job was to cut aggressively to save money. The result might have saved the company in the short term but long term damage remains to be seen. Thankfully, he wants to go back to what Unity did best: develop the most versatile game engine in the world. Maybe there's a chance Unity gets back on the right track, but I won't hold my breath. Overall: bad management track record, old CEO out but some bad apples remain, new management is a mixed bag, uncertain future

Talented People Aboard a Sinking Ship

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Great benefits, game development focused teams tend to attract people at the top of the industry, good work life balance.

      Cons

Executive management has steered this company in a terrible direction by spending a lot of money on acquisitions that they did not know how to utilize while abandoning their core business model. It's a shame so many talented developers had to suffer as a result. Some managers are terrible at leading, instead carrying their abusive practices from previous companies in the AAA gaming space. Aforementioned talented people have left to be where they're actually appreciated, that is if they weren't laid off. Things might improve now that a particular CEO is out of the picture

      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

-Flexible WFH environment -Decent work life balance and good benefits for the US based employees

      Cons

-CEO and CFO insist on being based in New York, when the Company is based in SF. Earnings calls are at 5:30am because screw you West Coast. -CFO will stop at nothing until all the G&A, Accounting, Tax, and, Finance team members are located in Bangalore in an effort to cut costs. Offshoring is massive here and will only continue to expand. -Constant anxiety about layoffs. Sometimes they announce mass layoffs, but more often do it in smaller waves so as to not rattle the cage. -Top heavy org structure. There's probably as many or more SVP, VPs, Sr. Dir level folks as there are individual contributors/leads.
