How are career development opportunities at Unity?

      Unity reviews

      It went downhill so quickly

      Senior software developer
      Former employee
      Montreal, QC
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

The first year I worked at Unity was amazing, everything was going so well. Then the first layoffs made us re-org and we lost a key member of our team and it was all downhill from there. Free lunches Good coworkers Good work life balance Relaxed atmosphere - I've heard this depends on the team though but mine was very relaxed Starting pay was good for the time

      Cons

I'll preface this by saying I was laid off via an email. My manager didn't even talk to me at all, which is an unbelievably cowardly thing to do. Almost every other coworker I had, even some I barely worked with, reached out and wished their best at least. But management at every level is terrible, nobody above me there cared about anything. They're just there to get paid and they don't care about anything else, even the company. I warned management about so many things that were going wrong and they never bothered to fix it, leaving to MANY member's quitting for those exact reasons. Basically 0 raises for the last 2 years - other companies have vastly surpassed them in salary Stock price is an absolute roller coaster C-level executives are the worst out there - vastly overpaid and vastly under performing without taking any responsibility Management at every level is atrocious - every single person I've ever talked to who has quit has blamed their terrible manager as their reason Internal technologies are a mess, every team uses different things My team reorged 5 times in the 2 years I was there, it became a meme that we'd re-org every quarter There is no career progression, they prevented many people from getting promotions for 0 reason other than the company being cheap My career progression was halted because of so many reorgs and layoffs

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      * Advanced Tech Stack: Company uses cutting-edge technologies. * Hybrid Work Flexibility: the company chooses the office days (3 days). * Fantastic Team: Great talented colleagues. ( Competitive Benefits: Excellent benefits package.

      Cons

      * While there are many great people, I feel the company doesn't always do enough to actively retain those who have dedicated years to the organization. * Opportunities for more frequent and constructive feedback would be beneficial for employee growth and development. * Enhancing HR's role as a resource and advocate for employees would greatly improve the overall employee experience. * The company could benefit from developing clearer pathways for career advancement and internal mobility

Lack of Growth, Transparency, and Stability

      Senior machine learning engineer

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      Cons

The company lacks stability and transparency, with limited opportunities for career growth. Compensation has remained stagnant for several years, and internal changes—such as layoffs—often occur without clear communication and hidden from the public.

      Pros

There are lots of opportunities to learn and improve on your career growth, a great culture, and wonderful people, opportunities to contribute to the game engine.

      Cons

In general, some skills might be unusable in other areas except the game industry so this should be kept in mind but other than that there are no cons.

      uncertainty and no accountability

      Senior software engineer
      Former employee
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

good wlb, a lot of holidays(it's really not a pro since i'd prefer hardworking and growth, but it is a pro when there is not much work planned) good colleagues. most people are nice to work with, but lack of the expertise in domain knowledge. rarely see tech leaders in this company. sorry to discredit the ICs, but some of them are checked out.

      Cons

lots of RIFs that generates a lot of uncertainty throughout the personal career path as well as company path. no tech leader or tech innovation. no product vision. lots of bureaucracy and politics and weird promotions. senior management is always planning but never communicate concrete deliverables and roadmaps.
