      Devops Engineer Interview

      May 12, 2017
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Ad Hoc (DC)

      Interview

Their process is .. very unique. You apply, and then they shoot an email asking you to do a technical assessment. They have four programming "homework" assignments, depending on what position you are shooting for. You must complete this homework assignment before even being interviewed. The homework assignments aren't bad or overly difficult, and you are encouraged to do two of them. I would estimate 10 hours at the minimum (presumably you should include your unit testing process) if you are familiar or up to 25 if you aren't (but are a quick learner). It's important to note that you aren't "guaranteed" an interview, so if they don't like the solution you've provided, your time was wasted. The homework is certainly geared more to programming than it is to operations. Finally, they give you open access to their slack channel so you can talk to the team members; all team members that I talked to were super nice and helpful. For me, personally, the process left a bad taste in my mouth; it felt like they had no skin in the game whereas I had to jump through hoops just for an interview. To me, it's a two way street; I'd like to get to know the company a little first before investing ten hours of my life for something that could be for nothing. In short, be prepared for a ~10 hour application process before even talking to someone. If you are desperate for a job, that may play in your favor, as I can't imagine they are getting very many candidates who have that amount of time to apply for a job.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Ad Hoc (DC) in Sep 2017

      Interview

I have great respect for the engineering team at Ad Hoc but their recruiters are not good. It starts off with applying for a position online. Once they review your application they send you a link to a Github repository with instructions to pick an assignment. The assignments are pretty simple but complete and should only take a couple of hours. When you finish they have you submit it to a website where it is anonymized and reviewed. If they like your work they get back to you and start the process. The whole process is really neat and I would love to see it adopted at other organizations! Unfortunately, I can't say very nice things about the talent team. For every point the engineering team gets, the recruiters take one away. Everything from having to constantly call to check up on the status of your application to them not responding to emails. When I got my offer it didn't include any details of the health benefits or any other standard information and when I asked about it they told me they could only give me that info after I accepted the job.
