Phone call, followed by an in-person meeting at Starbucks.
The person who expressed interest in me from the Omaha location sounded like a really good guy. He went over the position, salary and benefits that all sounded great.
I met with the Dallas GM in person at a Starbucks. There he went over the position a little more.
One of the caveats that was initially offered to me was use of a company car. Being that this is a lot of "self-selling" to cold clients it sounded like a lot of driving around all over. When we went over use of the company car, he sounded like he didn't want his sales person to have access to the car, which wasn't helpful to hear.
The position itself and the business model for it, sounded rather challenging: Chase cold-leads all over Texas in hopes you will find a client at the right time, for a very limited market product. On top of that, bill them extra later for the repairs of exchanging their product. The client that they are targeting the most probably wants the least to do with them.
Knowing how maintenance and shops work from my own experience, outside sales like this position aren't a successful business model in most cases. The vast majority of owners and shops want to be left alone, and they'll come to you when they need inventory, it's rarely the other way around.
It was probably better I wasn't offered the job in the end, it sounded like a lot of extra time and discouragement for very little success.
Upon exiting the interview I was told I would hear back from the interviewer. I sent a thank-you email and never received even an acknowledgement and thank-you email from him back. I also have never heard anything from him further.
I probably wouldn't waste my time with a company like this, just unprofessional when you're getting two separate stories about the position and the guy interviewing you isn't courteous or considerate enough to send you a "I got your email" thank you note, or follow back up with you like he said he would.
I also thought it was a bit unprofessional to meet at a place like Starbucks and not at least offer someone a drink there.
