Allegheny Country Club interview questions

I sent my resume. I had a phone interview with the manager. The manager told me to book a flight out. Arrived, had a tour of the club. Met the locker room manager. I stayed overnight in their guest rooms. I was interviewed by Management. He asked me to stay for the Food & Beverage meeting to meet the chef, events coordinator, locker room manager and one other. I met the servers, chatted with them regarding the club. Then management became very cold, vague and made excuses that they didn't have the funds needed to make this position successful. Now, I received a 1099-misc income form for flying out. I will be paying taxes on the interview they asked me to fly out. I was not aware of this. I feel they mislead me into buying the ticket, so they wouldn't have to pay the taxes.
