I interviewed for a Brand Public Relations Specialist position and went into the process genuinely excited about the opportunity. I've followed the brand for years, attended company events, and felt my professional background aligned closely with the role.
The interview was a 30-minute phone screening. Early in the conversation, I was asked about a recent company partnership/acquisition. Because I wasn't familiar with that specific development, I was told I appeared underprepared and hadn't done enough research on the company.
The conversation then focused heavily on the fact that candidates who had advanced further in the process had portfolios. I explained that I do have a portfolio and would be happy to provide it, but there was little interest in reviewing it during or after the call.
I also felt that several of my responses were cut short, making it difficult to fully discuss my experience in media relations, outreach, event planning, writing, and brand communications.
When I asked questions about success in the role and what a typical day looked like, the answers were fairly vague, which left me with limited insight into the position itself.
The interview reinforced the importance of having a portfolio readily available, but overall I left feeling that the discussion focused more on perceived shortcomings than on my qualifications and potential fit for the role.
