      Account Executive Interview

      May 12, 2016
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Chicago, IL
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Chicago-23 (Chicago, IL) in May 2016

      Interview

In my opinion, this is a poorly run, deceitful, and disorganized business that seems to be operating in a fashion comparable to a pyramid scheme. I wish I read the reviews more thoroughly before wasting my time, energy, and money to travel to do an interview here. Upon arrival, one of the employees took me to get lunch (that I paid for - since he got out of line to get a table once I ordered my meal). There, he explained the business's operations to me and how they do in-store sales to customers. He then took me to the field to shadow him. The “field" was a Walmart in a seemingly unsafe part of town. He set up a table there with advertisements as he tried to sell a product to passerby. After watching him for about 20 minutes, he told me I should probably get an uber home - so the interview ended at Walmart. To add to this, I was told I would hear back the next day about my status on the interview, and I never heard back from them. Even if I was offered a position, I would not accept it. I would rather be unemployed and continue searching than work here.

      Application

I applied through other source. I interviewed at Chicago-23 in Mar 2016

      Interview

Very odd experience. Received a phone call and told that my resume looked great. The HR person on the phone was incredibly nice and extremely friendly. She said the company had my resume and then complimented it. The HR representative on the phone was the highlight of this interview She told me they'd have me meet with a director named Cody, to ask for Cody when I came in, and that their dress code is business professional. I received a text the morning of for confirmation. When I walked in, I asked for Cody. The receptionist asked for my resume(which was unusual since they didn't mention bring one on the phone or in emails, but I brought mine just in case), name, and told me I'd meet with Michael. That was interesting since I was told Cody through email and on the phone. I felt kinda dumb asking for Cody and being told I'd meet with someone else. They could have mentioned the change in the confirmation text or give me a reason for the change. The interview was very basic. I was asked about my education and work experience while Michael wrote notes on my resume. He asked why I wanted the job. Talked for less than a minute about sells. He had a very brief overview of the company. He basically said they were looking for a salesperson and wanted to promote after that. He never mentioned anything about benefits or pay which is very unusual especially since I brought up that I left my last job to look for better paying opportunities and one would think that pay and earning potential would be a huge sell for the job. He then told me that the second interview is really you going out with someone shadowing them for the day and then come back at the end of the day for a final interview. Honestly, It seemed like he was selling a bunch of fancy job titles that people would like. Account executive and the titles of jobs they want to groom people for look great on a resume but when you aren't even told about pay, benefits, are expected to spend an entire day following someone around for a second interview, and pretty much want you to go door-to-door to businesses, it isn't worth it. It wouldn't be too bad to have a long second interview, just to go to one or two places, or spend one hour with one of their account executives, but to spend an entire day with no compensation is a little extreme and something I've only experienced with other jobs that do this type of business. (Sidenote, they usually have very vague names like Blue Inc and websites of a similar template which features a slideshow of vague pictures and/or quotes.) I've never heard of any top companies that would have potential hires spend an entire shift as an interview especially without reimbursement and a situation where the person being interviewed couldn't leave immediately as he or she would have to make the person they are shadowing bring them back or find their own way back.

First and foremost, we are delighted that your first point of contact with our firm was so helpful and friendly. She will be thrilled to hear such positive feedback. We would like to formally apologize for any mix up or misunderstanding as to which director you would be meeting with. As you can imagine, they are very busy and also very hands on with the training within our team. They enjoy going out with our executives to the onsite business meetings in an effort to build great relationships within the team as well as improve the campaign for the client. I am sure it was a day where an executive had Cody out with them for a client meeting. As for the preliminary interview, we use this time to have one of our Directors get to know the candidate and also answer any questions the candidate may have. It is a brief interview because the second round portion is much more in depth as you mentioned and most companies do not disclose a pay structure for the company in a first round of three possible interviews. Michael must have believed our pay structure would have been a better paying opportunity for you if he decided to move forward with the interviewing process. Lastly, we cannot decide how other firms decide to do their interviewing process. We only know that we have received great feedback on the way we do ours. We have found that it gives a candidate an opportunity to see how and why a fortune 500 company would find our methods so effective and efficient. It also gives us an opportunity to really get to know the individual that we are looking to possibly hire and bring into our family here at Chicago-23.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Chicago-23 (Chicago, IL) in Feb 2016

      Interview

After specifically asking if this was a commission based job, stating clearly that I was only looking for a job with a base salary, I was told not to worry, and that they had "many different types of pay structure." This is a lie. Not only is this purely commission-based, but it essentially a pyramid scheme.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

After the one-on-one, again misleading about the pay structure, they schedule you to come back on a separate day to take you out to shadow a salesperson. Going inside businesses, cold, door-to-door, with most of the businesses exhausted by Chicago-23 sales rep's apparent incessant sales attempts. Again, withholding what the pay is, until taking me to "lunch" at the very end of the day. There were reviews on Glassdoor warning of this, but I was so blinded by my desire to find a job that I ignored the reviews. If you are not interested in a door-to-door, soliciting-type job, and do not want to work solely on commission, then I advise to seek employment elsewhere.
