I applied through an employee referral. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Cruise (San Francisco, CA) in Apr 2021
Interview
I was referred to Cruise by someone I know. Recruiter contacted me a week after applying.
The overall interview experience was amazing. The recruiter was friendly and wanted to form a connect straight away.
After a discussion with the recruiter, I was scheduled for a technical phone screen. This was more of a discussion around my experience, what cruise does, what would be job be if hired, etc. Ending with a coding question. The question was hard enough to gauge your problem solving skills and easy enough to be completed under 15 minutes, if done correctly.
Apparently the interviewer liked me a lot and got a call from recruiter the next morning to schedule a virtual onsite. It had a total of 5 interviews.
- Basic computer fundamentals: Standard Software Engineer interview, domain knowledge questions followed by a coding question.
- Systems Design: Android focused systems design, talked about UI components, View Models, etc.
- 2 Android coding exercises: working with the interviewers to write code in Android
- Behavioral: Discussion with hiring manager.
Overall the interview experience was good and I enjoyed interviewing with cruise. A lot to learn.

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Cruise (San Francisco, CA)
Interview
The interview process consisted of an initial recruiter screen followed by a technical phone interview focused on data structures and problem-solving in Python. The onsite loop included 4 rounds: one coding round (medium LeetCode-style problem), one system design round focused on building a scalable ML data processing pipeline, one backend/API design round, and one behavioral round. Interviewers emphasized real-world problem solving, tradeoffs, and communication. Overall, the process was structured and aligned with large-scale distributed systems and ML infrastructure.
Online submission. Then contacted by recruiter. The phone screening, and then onsite, which lasted an entire day in San Francisco office. Sat in a room while interviewers came and left.

Question 1
generic questions, nothing to really test what I knew. The interviewers seemed to not know how to interview a candidate and what to look for. I didn't want to work there after what i saw.
