I didn’t hear anything for about 4-5 months after my initial application on USAJOBS then out of the blue I received an email about interviewing asking if I was available that week (so very short notice). The first round of interviewing was with the three section chiefs and the questions were typical structured interview style but still pretty easygoing. A couple weeks passed while they interviewed all three of my professional references and then I was invited for a final round interview with the Chief Counsel which was more informal, a few structured questions, but pleasant. She indicated I would be receiving an offer quickly due to hiring needs and that they’d work with me on my post-military timeline. Immediately following that interview, I was asked for proof of my current income and I explained how military income works with untaxed basic housing allowance that I absolutely consider part of my income. Another month+ passed and I received a rejection over email without any further explanation after I was told in that final interview I’d be getting an offer, which I now to believe was in very poor taste to say. All I can think of is that they were hoping for a lowball salary, but I know my worth based on the quality and length of my experience in addition to how much it would cost to live in the D.C. area and I specifically indicated in my job application the lowest level I’d be willing to accept before they ever wasted time interviewing me. I won’t apply here again in the future after this experience.
