I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Datatonic
Interview
Had two rounds. An initial HR screen and a tech screen with a senior MLE. The questions asked in the tech screen were not very related to the job description. The tech screen interviewer was not very inviting and seemed to have only a few questions and it seemed more like a test designed to fail than a screening. I was personally excited for this interview because my experience aligned well with the JD but the feedback was also very generic.
Other Senior Machine Learning Engineer Interview Reviews for Datatonic
Had a great first round interview with the manager. They're basically doing the same work I do at my current job.
Got to the second interview round, which was the technical interview by two of their senior engineers.
Pros:
- Impressive client portfolio and interesting GenAI/ MLOps challenges
- One interviewer was excellent. He was professional and asked system design questions directly relevant to the job.
- The system design questions were practical and well-structured
- Clear evidence of technically challenging projects
Cons:
- Significant inconsistency between interviewers
- One interviewer arrived late and focused on implementation trivia rather than problem-solving ability
- His questions asked were kind of basic, which left me wondering if he understood the senior-level role
- The rejection feedback about 'MLOps depth' didn't match what was actually discussed in the interview
Datatonic has strong technical talent and great projects to work on. The manager and senior engineer who led the interview were a pleasure to talk to. However, the difference in professionalism between the two technical interviewers was surprising. As an interviewer myself, I would recommend standardizing the process so as to not let personal biases get in the way of hiring good candidates.
