      Head of School Interview

      Jan 23, 2021
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      New York, NY
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 8 weeks. I interviewed at Guidepost Montessori (New York, NY)

      Interview

The interview process was excessive and redundant. Nearly 10 hours of interview time and 4 hours of writing exams. They praised my philosophy and how it aligned with the mission. Praised my advanced level of education and leadership experience. Then they offered me 57k below market value for the position. They offered me a non-livable wage in a verybexpensive city. They told me it was because of covid. 🙄 I negotiated and got them to go up a bit. They sent a new offer. The following day asked me to hold off on signing so they can adjust the date on the offer and scheduled a call to discuss start date. During that call they rescinded the position they had already offered me TWICE. The Assistant Head of School resigned during the process too and they even had me start looking for someone to fill that position. They rescinded the position because "while they fundamentally agree with me, they aren't really focusing on [equity] in their schools right now." A.k.a they're a racist, sexist, ableist educational institution and top leadership is ONLY interested in lining their pockets with money. Full stop.

Thank you for providing feedback and sharing about your experience in the interview process. We acknowledge that in our pursuit to find excellent school leaders for our schools, we are diligent in creating a process in which not only are we gauging leadership skillset and likelihood of success in role, but we are also allowing space for candidates to decide if we are the right choice as the next step in their career. Replacing a Head of School who has received an internal promotion within our organization is a responsibility we take very seriously. This requires a series of extensive interviews as a critical part of the process for protecting our school’s culture and ensuring a seamless transition for our school community. This often requires input from a variety of stakeholders, and we know that this process can take considerable time. We fully acknowledge that our fast-paced start-up culture with a maniacal focus on delivering a high-quality Montessori education may not be for everyone. We also know that our mission to educate children using the Montessori pedagogy in which diversity and inclusion are inherently at the core of everything we do, may not be always be fully understood by those who do not already have experience working in a Montessori school. It is our priority to create thriving and enduring school communities all across the globe. Your perspective highlights a challenge that many schools face and is a top concern of ours, too. It is simply challenging to provide a high- quality educational program in an expensive city. In our pursuit to do this we offer substantial financial assistance for all kinds of families to join us and need to balance that with compensation ranges that allow for a sustainable program. It became clear throughout the offer process that your approach to leading a school community and the specific needs of this particular school were not a match. We openly shared this fact with you when we ultimately made the decision to rescind the offer. This outcome was not due to your perception that we do not value diversity and inclusion, because we clearly do. As a fundamental value of Montessori pedagogy, it is core to our mission to give each child the opportunity to reach their fullest human potential. We wish you success in finding a position that focuses on the ways in which you are looking to contribute to education.

      Interview

Pleasant at first. Regional VP and successful manager at one online interview then was invited for a campus visit with another former HOS now campus success manager for a ' chat' , they claimed it was not a formal interview and said see you later at the end of the interview and claimed I would hear from HR at the end of the week. After maybe a week or so still hadn't heard back, no response from HR with a follow-up email, called and HR mentioned the end of the other week and told me I do not have to presume I am rejected , that they are just interviewing another candidate, and that I would be informed either way. Did not hear back ever since.

      Interview

I recently went through the interview process with Guidepost Montessori and wanted to share my experience. Pros: One aspect I appreciated was the inclusion of written examples. This allowed me to demonstrate how I would respond to various situations, giving a clear picture of my thought process and problem-solving skills. It was a great way to showcase my abilities beyond just verbal responses in an interview setting. Cons: However, the process involved meeting individually with too many people. This resulted in at least four interviews before an offer was even extended. While I understand the importance of a thorough hiring process, the number of interviews felt excessive and time-consuming. Overall, the interview process was a mixed experience with both positive and challenging aspects.
