I went on two interviews, the first with the CEO, the second with the CEO again and also the potential department head. The interviews were relaxed but professional, and both people were polite and seemed genuinely engaged with me. There were no trick questions and no hard sales; it was pretty enjoyable. However, when they extended the job offer, the salary was fairly substantially less than what I asked for in my cover letter (which I included per request of the job listing) AND less than what I currently make - which they confirmed twice, during both in-person interviews. At any point in this process - when they received my requested salary in my cover letter or in either interview - they could have been upfront about their expected pay range so that we could have not wasted each other's time. However, they chose to string me along instead, and I wasn't really thrilled about that.
