      Systems Support Tech Interview

      Oct 25, 2016
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Richmond, VA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Mapcom Systems (Richmond, VA) in Sep 2016

      Interview

PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLYING. I applied and interviewed with Mapcom a few weeks ago, and I can honestly say it was by far the worst and mishandled interview process that I have ever taken part in. The initial interview with the lone HR employee went well and was what I expected it to be. However, the second interview with with regular employees, not management, is where things quickly went downhill. The first thing that was a red flag for me is why am i being formally interviewed by a regular employee and not a qualified manager? I was interviewed by 3 employees who all had a unique history with the company. The first one, who had only been working there for about 7 months, did not interview me at all. I was asked about my job history and then we had a formal conversation about non technical issues just to kill time until the next employee came to interview me. The next employee was more of the same, but this conversation centered around the beer that he could not wait to get a hold of downstairs in the employee kitchen after work was over; still, no technical or standard interview questions. The final employee is what really caused a red flag for me. He straight up told me that he had no idea how he got this job because he had no college degree, no IT or IS experience, and he previously worked as something like a flower salesman. I found myself telling him about databases and other tools that are needed for this type of work. He said he only had a few months of experience, but he was something like a guru of the office. To sum it all up, this company really needs to change the interview process and have more qualified individuals conducting them. The process was more of a meet and greet instead of an interview. And, judging from the office visits and going on the company Facebook page, diversity is not something that seems to be a priority for them so minorities should be aware of that prior to applying here...

It is always good to hear feedback directly from a potential employment candidate, so we appreciate these comments. Unlike the interview process described by this candidate, our interview process typically involves at least three phases. The first is typically an onsite visit by the candidate to meet with HR and then a few employees from the department in which the potential hire would work. This first onsite interview may in fact seem informal compared to some other companies’ hiring practices. However, employees at Mapcom work together closely, and everyone in the company values our good-natured and collegial attitude and culture. That is why we think the best way to get to know a potential employee is for him or her to simply meet with other employees, who then share with management their take on whether a particular candidate would be a positive addition to the company in terms of interpersonal, social and communication skills and approach. Once a candidate successfully passes our initial assessment phase, we move on to more substantive and technical aspects of our interview process. So, if you have the substantive knowledge, experience, drive and skills to join the Mapcom team, we strongly encourage you to apply for one of our open positions. We are committed to the quality of our work, the satisfaction of our clients, and to the personal and professional success of our employees. Thanks, Mapcom Systems
