      Engineering Manager Interview

      Sep 10, 2021
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      London, England
      Declined offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Moneybox (London, England) in Sep 2021

      Interview

Summary: What MB advertised is Engineering Manager position. What MB should advertise is for Team Lead position. What MB actually wants is a Tech Lead for one team. Some details: Interview process starts with a talk to a nice lady who tells you about MB, this position (which is not what it seems to be) and asks you a few simple questions about your past and then if she is happy with you, she transitions you to the next stage. 2nd stage is some refactoring test which you supposed to do at home in your own time. It's where I requested for it to be replaced with more face to face stage (e.g. via Zoom) where they could ask any questions or even do P2P coding exercises with me. First, this is fair as we both lose our time and not just me. Second, this kind of refactoring/coding tests are easy to get outsourced and put on Reddit or somewhere where people will do and discuss them. It's not my first time doing tests like this and I know from experience that it rarely leads to company having good developers. It will always end up with a mix of them which can do more harm than many companies realize. It's a different thing to work with a junior from working with someone who supposed to be at about your level but is not at all. I have been also told that as an Engineering Manager (Tech Lead really) I would not be able to change the interview process for my team. This made me finally refuse moving forward with this. I did not want to be a glorified developer and imagined the role differently. I'm sure though that many other developers will love this role so do apply as company do nice things and people seem nice.

Hi there, we are very sorry to hear that you have not had a great interview experience with us. We’re always open to try new ways of working but for this interview process we needed to keep the formatting as is was to ensure consistency with others applying for the role. Our interview formatting is standard across the company so if there was a change for one team, we’d need to look at how this may impact other teams / areas also. We'd like to thank you for your feedback, and we ensure you that we will take it onboard for the future!
