      Systems Administrator I Interview

      Feb 4, 2014
      Anonymous employee
      University Park, PA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Penn State (University Park, PA)

      Interview

The hiring process is extremely long. I applied for a position with an immediate start and was not called for an interview until over two months later. I interviewed in front of a panel. I was asked many questions, some of which did not pertain to the position (were about me and my life).

      Application

      I interviewed at Penn State

      Interview

I had a phone interview discussing the position and my qualifications. The interviewer concluded the phone screen by asking about salary requirements, which I freely shared. The interviewer then stated that the salary for the position would be in a certain (much lower) range. I was told i would receive a call back to confirm the salary range; several days have passed. Penn State publishes job postings along with their salary bands. The range offered by the interviewer is in the lowest 25% of the band. Others have said this is typical Penn State behavior. They only offer in the lowest part of the range and never pay above the midpoint.

      Anonymous employee
      State College, PA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Penn State (State College, PA) in Apr 2011

      Interview

Hiring process starts with applying for a position through the jobs site. Resumes and cover letters are uploaded to the site and associated with an open position. Resumes and cover letters are reviewed by the department hiring, usually the manager/director and a few select employees on the hiring committee. If an employee does not live in the area, initial interviews are done over the phone. Second and third interviews are often done face to face. Usually interviews have 3-5 people asking questions. After a candidate is chosen, HR will be notified of the choice. HR determines a salary based on the experience and education of the candidate. An offer is sent to the candidate for them to accept or refuse. If they refuse, the process is repeated on the next candidate.
