      Offensive Security Engineer Interview

      Aug 20, 2025
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Praetorian in Jun 2025

      Interview

The whole interview process took almost 2 months. Met with the recruiter and had a great conversation during the initial interview. Next was a "personality test" and a 1-hour long culture video. The personality test was a series of questions that told you your "personality make-up" and "thinking style". Not the worst test I've taken, but I felt it was unnecessary. The culture video was the CEO talking about his backstory, what motivates him, and how that affects how he runs the company. It was fine as an orientation to the company, but there were red flags given the consultants' minimal downtime from engagements. After watching the video and sending my response to the questions, I heard nothing for weeks until I sent a message to follow up and confirm I hadn't missed anything. I eventually heard back from the recruiter to send my availability for the 4-hour interview loop (over a month after the first interview). The assessments during the interview loop were done in their CYMPIRE system, which is a web-based training platform. During the logic puzzle portion, the system wasn't working, and the interviewer had to read the questions. I don't do a lot of logic puzzles, so I worked through them as best as I could. The code review and web application sections went well. I was rusty on reverse engineering, but still solved the challenge. I received an email a week later saying that they weren't moving forward. The email contained feedback from the interview, which was nice of them to provide. That said, I feel like I dodged a bullet after talking with other colleagues about Praetorian and the "culture" over there. I won't be applying there again in the future. There are better companies out there that care more about your ability to do the job than some personality test or logic puzzles.

Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback about your experience with our interview process. We’re very sorry to hear that the experience was frustrating and did not meet your expectations. We want to be fully transparent — the delay you mentioned between interviews was due to us pausing our process while we revamped one of our interview stations. Everyone was meant to receive an update at that time, so if you did not hear from us, that’s on us. We should have communicated clearly and consistently, and we apologize for the lack of clarity and the impression that you had been left without updates. That is not the experience we want anyone to have when interviewing with Praetorian. We also take your points about the technical issues with the platform and the overall flow of the interview seriously. Candidate experience is very important to us, and your input will help us identify areas where we need to improve. If you’d be open to continuing the conversation, our Director of People Ops, Michelle Rhodes, would be glad to connect with you directly. You can reach her at michelle.rhodes@praetorian.com . She welcomes constructive feedback and would ensure it’s shared with the right people on our team. Thank you again for sharing your perspective — we truly appreciate it, even if the process did not meet the standard we aim for.

      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Praetorian in Dec 2024

      Interview

They make you listen to a culture video that's an hour long, there's not much regarding the culture though. Next are "logic" puzzles. There's not much in the way of logic though, one was a complete riddle, two were decent, the fourth I can't say because rather then type up a script for the interviewer, they leave it to them to explain it on the fly. My requests to explain only made him flustered. This made the puzzle more confusing. It was clear he didn't understand the puzzle himself because he couldn't explain it. This was as far as I got.

      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Praetorian in Nov 2024

      Interview

Over three months, I invested significant time and energy progressing through a series of interviews and assessments—each step appearing to confirm your genuine interest in my candidacy. I met every requirement, even completing an extensive cultural assessment and technical interviews. Yet, despite knowing my location from day one and my willingness to relocate, I was ultimately dismissed on “logistical” grounds only at the final stage. Do not waste your time and energy applying to this unethical company.

      Question 1

They will make you take a personality test, an essay writing task on an hour long culture video, logic & puzzles in next round, and 3 technical interviews next, followed by an interview with the CEO.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re genuinely sorry for the frustration you experienced during the interview process, and we truly appreciate the commitment and effort you dedicated. Your time, dedication, and enthusiasm were evident at every stage. Ultimately, logistical and business factors—specifically the 28+ week work permit timeline, the lack of guaranteed visa approval, and uncertainties around the election—led us to conclude the process. This decision was carefully weighed, including at the executive level. Your experience highlights areas where we can improve communication, and we’re committed to doing better. If you'd like to continue the conversation, please feel free to reach out directly at michelle.rhodes@praetorian.com. Thank you again for helping us grow, and we wish you all the best in your career journey. Michelle Rhodes Director of People Operations
