      Softweare Developer Interview

      Dec 15, 2022
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Protocol Labs (New York, NY) in Nov 2022

      Interview

Contacted by their recruiter. An intro. call was setup. Later I met with one of their engineering managers for an hour intro and fit assessment. Went pretty well. He identified two teams for me and overall I was excited about the opportunity. We then moved to onsite interview. First session (coding): No coding during this session. The interviewer asked basic DS and Algo questions, how to implement an LRU (we only talked about it), and few questions related to tries and trees. This went pretty well. Second session (small scale): Met a hippie (rather than a developer). He kept correcting my language (I guess he was a social justice snowflake). Asking me to use other words instead of `master` and `slave`. Asked about how to implement hashmaps and how to make them distributed. Went pretty well. Third session (system design): Met one of their engineers I have seen on Youtube. Like his videos, he had a terrible microphone and I literally couldn't hear what he was saying. He was a mess. Asked about RateLimiter. I answered few approaches based on my learnings on Youtube and blogs. He wanted to have a slightly better solution, which himself forgot!! He tried to explain to me what he was ultimately expecting me to answer but he still forgot the answer and needed a few iteration to even articulate that! Fourth session (culture): Typical boilerplate stuff. Went awesome. After three weeks, got a no answer w/o any feedback. I don't recommend these people. They are disorganized. If these are their best folks, I'd bet on something else.
