      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      Jan 6, 2023
      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

      I interviewed at Shapr3D

      Interview

First I had a call with a HR manager and after discussing briefly my previous experiences and motivation he sent over the homework. I got 1 week to finish the homework and I really had to put a lot of time into it. The next call was a homework review where we've discussed the reasoning behind my decisions and architecture. The next two calls were with engineering managers then I got an offer.

      Question 1

the technical interview questions were about my homework and the AWS services in general

      Budapest
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Shapr3D (Budapest)

      Interview

It was quite some time ago. We quickly established that I don't know 3D modeling, have never worked with it, and don't have experience with 3D libraries, but they assured me that it wasn't required. Then they gave me a homework assignment that required 3D knowledge. As I don't give up on development tasks easily, I accepted the challenge and hoped they would take into account my lack of 3D experience. I couldn't have been more wrong. They evaluated my solution as if I were a senior 3D developer. I literally burst into laughter when I read that my solution wasn't generic enough from a 3D modeling perspective, and a few lines later, they said my C++ was too complex (I had implemented a generic solution). I discourage everyone from applying unless you are an experienced 3D developer or enjoy being lied to on requirements and expectations.

Hi there, Thank you for sharing your feedback — even though it’s been a while since your interview, we appreciate you taking the time to reflect on the experience. We’re genuinely sorry to hear you came away feeling misled about the expectations for the role. While prior experience with 3D modeling isn’t a requirement for most of our engineering roles, our technical challenges do often involve real-world problems inspired by the work we do — which can naturally include 3D concepts. We do our best to evaluate solutions based on problem-solving ability, software engineering fundamentals, and communication, not just domain knowledge. That said, it sounds like we may not have been as clear as we should’ve been about how your work would be evaluated, and we appreciate you calling that out. Your perspective is helpful, and we’ll keep working to ensure our process sets the right expectations and gives every candidate a fair and transparent experience. Wishing you the best in your continued career.
