I'm a principal software engineer. I was approached by a Shippo recruiter to interview for a senior software engineer position. I agreed, and the recruiter set up an zoom interview with the hiring manager.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
The interviewer asked a question about searching for permutations of characters in a string. I provided a working solution, but apparently my solution didn't impress the interviewer.
I applied through a staffing agency. I interviewed at Shippo (San Francisco, CA) in Apr 2019
Interview
I interviewed for the Senior Software Engineering Role. The onsite interview consisted of 3, hour long interviews, lunch with the team, and a 30 minute chat with the co-founder/president.
1. The first interview was a coding question and a few minutes of a ‘mock peer-review’ of a piece of code.
2. The second was focused on designing a user’s workflow and discussing how to implement it in the backend. Also asked about a system that I previously implemented.
3. The third was a typical system design question.
The questions were very practical and dealt with issues that I’d expect to handle at Shippo. Also expect 1-2 behavioral questions in each interview.
I was a bit confused throughout the process. A recruiter reached out to me about the senior position even though I had ~1 year experience. I brought this up in the phone screen but her response was along the lines of 'although we are looking for someone from the senior role, we are generally looking for good engineers.' When I went to the onsite, the interview questions were tailored for someone to fill a senior role, so frankly I'm not sure what they were really expecting.
Overall I had a very positive experience. From the way they treated me and and each other, I could tell that they genuinely cared about who they work with, as well as building a positive and constructive work culture. At lunch everyone was friendly and conversational and the catered food was great. I did feel like some of the interviewers were more laid back relative to what I typically experience, but everyone was respectful. At the end they asked for feedback about the experience and they seemed genuinely interested in my input.
