In July, I applied online for a position and quickly heard back from a recruiter to schedule a phone screening. During the screening, I was informed that the position would start in September, and I was set up for a Microsoft Teams interview the following week. The interview went well, and I was invited to shadow the unit I had applied to, as I’m a new graduate nurse. I made myself available for the entire week to shadow, but the day they chose coincided with a full class of nursing students. This left little room for me to engage with the nurses on the unit. When I tried to interact, I received one-word responses, and it felt like they weren’t very welcoming, even though I had mentioned I had recently interviewed for the unit. Despite this, I remained interested because it was my dream specialty, and I had a great conversation with the unit manager. However, as time passed, I didn’t receive any updates. I sent a few follow-up emails asking for status updates and was repeatedly told that they were still interviewing candidates, without any clear timeline for a decision. I continued to express my interest and reach out, only to receive the same responses each time. Eventually, the original start date passed, and I requested more clarity on when I might hear back. I was told I should hear something soon, as they were still reviewing many applicants. It is now October and I was just told I did not get it. I’ve since accepted a job elsewhere, but this process was incredibly frustrating. I was very eager to work there, and the lack of communication felt discouraging, especially as a new graduate nurse starting out. I felt that my time was not respected, which has ultimately deterred me from wanting to work there in the future.
