      Front End Developer Interview

      May 2, 2016
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Studio71 (San Francisco, CA) in Oct 2015

      Interview

I began this process in early October 2015. CDS called me to set up an informal screening initially with a lead front end developer. We discussed the company , it's culture, and role at length. He told em that the next steps would involve a take home challenge utilizing a front end framework. if all went well, they would bring me in to meet the team. The important thing at this point that he stressed was the fact that they "prefer" to have candidates show their chops through an applicable coding exercise rather than irrelevant whiteboarding. This was really encouraging to me. After submitting the challenge, I was asked to interview on site. I was asked to meet with two developers for an hour total but the interview went on for three total hours. The first interview was a back end developer. He went straight to a white board and began asking me back end related questions. Put off a little, I still went through with his questions since I thought that they might want to see how I think outside of the front end scope. He didn't pay attention, was checking email, and repeating questions to answers I already gave. He criticized my portfolio and my knowledge of backend technologies. When I did get a brief chance to ask him questions, he was flippant and curt. He bashed his company which is partially located in LA. My next interviewer was the lead front end developer. He came in with a question packet, some paper, and began white-boarding with me... I don't mind so much that this company decided to have me white board. I mind that they stressed the fact that they don't initially over the phone. I never had a chance to discuss the coding challenge that I created with any of the two developers I met with that day.
