I responded by saying that I was available weekends, mornings, Saturdays - anything but Sundays as I'm unable to work on my religion's Sabbath day. I was clear about my reason for this restriction. The assistant manager cut me off: "You have to work Sundays." "Well," I said carefully, "perhaps if I took the position I would, but if that's a necessary prerequisite, then it is unlikely that I will take the position." "We'd all like our weekends off," she said dismissively, "but you have to work Sundays." Again, it was weirdly as though I were already employed and being given an order. "This is not a matter of wanting my weekend off," I said, staying friendly. "If it were, I would ask for Saturdays instead." She appeared to be getting quite cross with me and I saw that this would not be fruitful. "If this is a deal-breaker," I said, "I understand. You need to hire the people to work the shifts you need worked. I guess that's all there is to it." The store manager stepped in and said that actually I COULD have my Sundays off. The interview proceeded awkwardly and disagreeably. They never called me back. They were rude, dismissive, unprofessional from the moment that I walked into a completely empty store and had to wait several minutes before a soul made an appearance until the end when I was given an odd spiel about their call-back process.
