      UI/UX Designer Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Unity (Helsinki, Southern Finland) in Feb 2018

      Interview

I was invited for the first interview and talked with HR person. During the first 30 mins, recruiter asked me about general information such as motivation of applying, myself and experience in UX/UI design. Also asked me about basic coding knowledge and collaboration experience with developers. Rest of the time, recruiter kindly explained about interview process and information about the company. Unfortunately the company was looking for the person with strong UI skill so I was not suitable candidate. But recruiter was really kind.

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Unity (Montreal, QC) in Nov 2020

      Interview

Full interview process (from email requesting initial phone screening > final communication) was approx 1.75 months; though this was during the holiday season. Role was to be remote, but most closely working with the Montreal team. First step was a ~20-min phone screening. Friendly, clear, concise get-to-know-you session for both parties. Second step was a 45-min interview with the Hiring Manager. Friendly and inquisitive, to discover details about past experiences and approach to design. Third step was a Design Test. This specific test was the one and only ethical red flag, for me, despite being a common one. IMHO, a company's test should be hypothetical - a challenge created to give insight into a candidate's design thinking at a detailed level by tasking them with a problem that is NOT directly related to the company. When a design challenge asks for work that a candidate might actually do within the role they wish to attain, that challenge is directly requesting free work, which can very easily be used by the company to solve problems within the target team. With that said - every other aspect of this interview process and my knowledge of the company pointed towards transparency, accessibility, democratization, and straightforward communication - all of which I appreciate greatly. The design challenge asked for a maximum of 3 hours of work, including documentation presentation. Fourth and final step before the team's decision was 3 virtual-onsite interviews with potential team members across Montreal (CA), New York (US), and Brighton (UK). All were friendly and informative, asked important questions about past experience within teams, and were open to/transparent with all of my questions for them. All of the interviews during this process were with people that felt extremely honest, friendly, and helpful. They felt much more like interesting conversations rather than nerve-wracking tests. Ultimately, another candidate was chosen for the role, but I'm thankful to have gone through this process with Unity, and would be glad to do so again at a later time in my career.

      Question 1

How do you vouch for your perspective within a team that includes a lot of very different, strong perspectives, and how do you handle pushback?
