I applied online via email to a post at Nature Magazine online job board. Was contacted by the hiring manager for references. References were submitted. Shortly after was invited to interview 1 with the PI and lab manager. then I was invited to present at the lab meeting and answer questions. later it was followed up by interviews with the lab members. in total about 7 meetings. went very well.
