Question 1
Why do you want to do a PhD? Why here? What do you think are the biggest challenges in doing a PhD and how would you address them?
I applied through college or university. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at University of Leeds (Leeds, South East England, England) in Apr 2025
Interview
The interview process involves a one-on-one conversation with a main professor from the University of Exeter Business School. The interview is structured and direct, lasting around 20 minutes via Zoom. It begins with the professor asking the candidate to introduce their educational background. This part allows the candidate to summarize their academic history, including degrees earned, universities attended, areas of study, and any significant academic achievements.
Following the background introduction, the professor moves on to explore the candidate’s motivation for applying to the MRes + PhD programme and their reasons for choosing the University of Exeter specifically. This section provides an opportunity for candidates to reflect on their personal and professional goals, research interests, and alignment with the University’s academic strengths. Applicants are expected to explain why they are passionate about pursuing advanced research, how their previous studies and experiences have prepared them for this path, and what they hope to contribute to the academic community.
The interview is designed to be conversational rather than confrontational. It aims to assess both the candidate’s academic potential and their commitment to research. No unexpected technical questions or tests are included during the interview itself, although a separate psychometric exercise must be completed beforehand. Overall, the process is straightforward, focusing on understanding the candidate’s background, motivation, and fit for the programme. Candidates are encouraged to be clear, honest, and enthusiastic when sharing their experiences and ambitions.
