Physical UX Manager then Lead UX Designer Interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Volvo Cars in Apr 2023

      Interview

I am an expert of the automotive UX/UI field and I applied to multiple opportunities within Volvo Cars. Having 4-years management experience and being an expert of my field, I was a perfect match for the Physical UX Manager job. Unfortunately I have not been interviewed for this role as I am a MAN! Yes, Volvo is currently recruiting only women in management roles and as a consequence doing active DISCRIMINATION AGAINST MEN. Despite this discrimination I accepted to be interviewed for a lower role: "Lead UX Manager". For this interview, I had to prepare a presentation based on 2 projects from my portfolio. There were clear expectations provided by HR such as providing a context or detail the UX process. I was interviewed by a female manager. I started the presentation but I was quickly interrupted as she felt annoyed by the slides on the context and the process. it looked like she was not familiar with the UX automotive process (by the way it was not her background). So she asked me "I want to see designs" which is concerning as you should understand where the design come from, what is the reasoning and the context behind it. So I jumped to the slide where I detailed the cockpit of one my projects. She asked a couple of questions which highlighted her lack of knowledge (see detail below): is the driver display touch? Are these concept cars? what is the number next to the speed? She added that her team was growing to 15 people. So I asked her how she was going to structure it. Unfortunately it looks like it was very unclear in her mind. She also came across of being somebody with lots of prejudices and not actively listening. For example, it seems like she didn't want to believe that I worked on entire projects end-to-end despite the fact that I answered accurately all her questions. Also she suggested several time that I didn't work with feature owner before despite the fact I told her that to develop such projects end-to-end you have to. The way she led the interview is unacceptable. That's why I consider that she didn't demonstrate she was skilled for her job (neither from an expertise and a management point of view). It is obvious she has been chosen by Volvo for the wrong reasons. Due to the discrimination practices of this company, Volvo Cars should be boycotted.
