      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at theSkimm in Dec 2021

      Interview

The process was super organized thanks to a stellar and communicative recruiter who touched base every step of the way. I applied for a writer role initially, and after an initial 15-minute screening call with the recruiter (on a Monday), she told me she thought I was overqualified and suggested an editor role instead. Then I moved on to a 30-minute video call on Wednesday with a current senior editor with whom I’d be working. By Friday, I had a 30-minute video chat with the person who would be my direct supervisor. From there, the recruiter sent me an editorial test to be completed and sent back within 48 hours. I heard from her on Monday that it was well received, and I had my next interview (with my to-be supervisor’s supervisor) on Tuesday. From there, we scheduled my final interview with the editor-in-chief for the following Monday, and I received my offer that same day. So, the entire process took two weeks from start to finish, including a 15-minute recruiter screening, four 30-minute video interviews, and an editorial test!

      Interview

I applied directly from their site and was contacted 3 weeks later by the Managing Editor to set up a 30-minute video interview. She joined the call 5 minutes late, citing technical difficulties. Then midway through the interview, while I'm answering one of her questions, she goes on mute, is visibly talking to another person, then gets up and starts walking through the office to another room. It was incredibly unprofessional and distracting and really threw me off since I knew she wasn't actively listening to me. She also didn't acknowledge to me that she did that. After that, we were running up on time and she did stay a few minutes after to answer some of my questions. The next day, I received a generic rejection email from their no-reply email, not even acknowledging that I interviewed with them. Overall, it was a really bad experience, unprofessional, and not respectful of me or my time.
