What is a Porter?

A porter performs basic maintenance duties and general tasks for the company. These duties may include addressing guest inquiries and directing them to the relevant personnel, handling guest luggage and items, ensuring that equipment and facilities are safe, clean and organized, reporting any safety concerns or violations to superiors. Common career advancements for porters include progressing into a managerial or supervisory role with some advancements requiring the completion of further education.

Porters require a minimum education of a high school diploma or equivalent with most companies preferring prior experience working as a porter in a hospitality environment. Good candidates for this position are often helpful and polite with a proactive attitude that excels in customer service. Other valuable skills include basic arithmetic calculation and a good knowledge of the local area. Due to the nature of the work, porters are required to be physically able to stand for long hours at a time and move, carry and lift up to 70 lbs in weight.
