What is a Textile Designer?

Textile designers plan, create, and execute the crafting of original designs and finished products from textile materials. They devise the creative concept, sketch drawings and assemble fabric samples and swatches, and oversee the production of the designs. They often work in close collaboration with other departments, including sales and production, and may formulate presentations including concept illustrations and samples. They stay informed of market trends and consumer preferences. They establish and enforce quality control standards.

Textile designers commonly have a bachelor’s degree in fashion design, textile design, or a related field, along with a background in apparel or textile design. Proficiency using design software programs is expected. In-depth knowledge of market trends and fashion concepts is helpful, as is an understanding of textile production processes.

Responsibilities for Textile Designer

  • Assist in making color comments/approvals on print submit, strike off/bulk submit in a timely fashion.
  • Manage operations effectively through the optimization of the manufacturing processes, equipment, scheduling, and efficient supervision of personnel, in order to meet safety, quality, delivery and cost goals and objectives.
  • Ensure cells/processes have everything required for efficient starts and normal runs (people, tools, equipment, standard work, paperwork, materials).
  • Create/prepare print packages, including CAD artwork/repeats/technical print information/specific placement measurements within calendar deadlines.
  • Clearly and accurately communicate print issues/concerns/updates to cross-functional teams and overseas partners verbally and through detailed emails.

Qualifications for Textile Designer

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or material sciences.
  • Extensive costuming knowledge and experience.
  • Advanced technical illustration abilities.
  • Experience with splicing and templating.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and good manual dexterity.
