As an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (A-EMT) with the Department of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) you will:

Starting pay will be the minimum of the pay grade unless a candidate has qualifying full-time equivalent experience. Full-time equivalent experience is employment in a licensed EMS agency at the AEMT level. Also, every full year of active VBEMS volunteer experience will be counted as one-quarter of a year; four years VBEMS volunteer experience counts as one full year of full-time equivalent. Candidates with clearly defined full-time equivalent experience on their application may be placed in higher steps as follows:
NOTE: Salaries for each step do not reflect budgeted salary increases effective after July 1, 2026 which have not been finalized. Actual offer amount will be presented at time of offer.
NOTE: A $6,000 hiring bonus is being offered for this position set up in installements and subject to a repayment agreement The first installment of $3,000 will be paid after successful completion of Academy and release as an Attendant in Charge, second installment of $3,000 will be paid after a year of service as a released Attendant in Charge if performance is rated as "Meets Expectations" or higher.

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS:
Must be 18 years old at the time of employment.
Current Commonwealth of Virginia Certification and/or National Registry Advanced Emergency Medical Technician certification or higher. Current CPR certification.
Must be and remain eligible to function as an Emergency Medical Vehicle Operator in accordance with Virginia Department of Health - EMS Regulations and City/Departmental policies.
Must refrain from using all tobacco products on and off the job.
Must have a current and valid drivers license.

6. Selected candidates must be released to general supervision within four (4) months of completion of onboarding academy.

Note 2 of 4: This position is classified as Alpha-1, which means you are subject to call-back or hold-over during situations such as a declared “emergency.” You may be required to report for, or stay on, duty and potentially report to a location, not your typical workstation and/or perform work not typically done in your permanent position and/or report to a different Supervisor. This could mean nights, weekends, and/or holidays and be recalled for greater than a 24-hour period.

Note 4 of 4: This position is not based on a “home station.” Advanced EMTs can expect the possibility of being assigned to different stations, units, and sections of the city for each shift as required by the operation needs of the department.
VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
