The Director of Staff Development and Training leads the planning, development, and execution of comprehensive education and training programs that support workforce competency, leadership effectiveness, regulatory compliance, and a positive organization culture. This role oversees onboarding, mandatory and clinical education, leadership development, and continuous learning initiatives to ensure staff are prepared to deliver safe, high-quality care. Serving as a strategic partner to the Chief of Staff, the Director aligns training efforts with the hospitals, mission, values, and performance goals while using data and feedback to drive improvement, engagement, and long-term workforce development.
Leadership and Supervision

This position formally supervises the Staff Development Department which consist of (4) Staff Development Specialist, (3) Registered Nurse and (2) MHDD Technicians.

Manages the Staff Development Department and responsible for ensuring a comprehensive staff development program exist to provide relevant training and development for all disciplines.

Assists various hospital committees and work groups with training resources and/or implementation of new processes and applications.

Ensures Joint Commission standards, State and Federal Regulations, as well as LSH policies and procedures are met and information is accurate

Reinforces expectations for Staff Development personnel to follow through with their accountabilities for ensuring staff competency and performance.
Develops, Provides, and Evaluates Educational Programs

Conducts an annual staff survey of education needs, Researches and analyzes trends and develops an educational plan with department staff to meet agency needs. Develop training modules and programs including manuals, teaching aids, lesson plans, and learning objectives. Designs methods for gathering data in order to evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs.

Works closely with departmental heads of other departments and enlists additional staff from other disciplines to provide specialized educational plans. Works with external providers to schedule programs in addition to those provided by hospital staff.

Addresses identified issues to maintain quality presentations. Assists departmental staff and other providers to improve teaching skills including Training of Trainers workshops as well as individual observations, team building, and therapeutic interventions.

Periodically assesses effectiveness of NEO Orientation, to assess ongoing effectiveness of initial training and orientation; analyzes survey results; meets with Chief of Staff to identify trends and make recommendations for change; and implements revisions to orientation and training as necessary.

Utilizes multimedia platforms to improve staff training experience, employee engagement, and talent development.

Provides Staff Education

Responsible for providing training and education programs to meet competency requirements of the multiple disciplines of hospital staff. This includes knowledge of staff needs for competencies, developing lesson plans, scheduling and conducting training.

Plans, develops, and provides training and staff development programs, using knowledge of the effectiveness of methods such as classroom training, demonstrations, on-the-job training, meetings, conferences, and workshops

Periodically reviews content of training with appropriate staff to assure continuous compliance with agency needs, the Joint Commission, and CMS requirements are met.

Coordinates required annual training (Annual EXPO) for Larned State Hospital in collaboration with other departmental staff. Works with staff to develop and/or update training modules.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in the areas of education, psychology, criminal justice, nursing, social work or closely related field.
- One year of experience in providing direction necessary to implement the objectives of an agency, program, or organizational unit. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant.

Requires an approved drug test approved by the Kansas Department of Administration unless the incumbent is moving from one safety-sensitive position to another safety-sensitive position within the same agency performing substantially similar duties.
