When first-stage companies need fuel, they turn to Ignition. Founded by Microsoft veterans (including founding partner Brad Silverberg, who was head of Windows from 1990 to 1995) and former wireless communications executives, Ignition invests in its areas of expertise: business information technology, software, communications, infrastructure, and consumer services. The firm, along with its Chinese affiliate, manages some $2.5 billion and invests primarily in early-stage enterprises. Ignition usually acquires large but non-controlling stakes in its portfolio companies and holds onto them long-term. It also makes later-stage investments through Ignition Capital.
